Cylinder Head Cover

So far we have identified three (3) different Cylinder head Covers for the "sandcast" and K0 Models. We have labeled them as type "A" - "B" and "C".

The major reason for the difference between the two covers will be to accommodate the later type cam carriers fitted from 1010338 onwards - the inlet rocker shafts are longer, requiring the cam carriers to be wider also, hence the "cut outs" and other internal differences noted for the 11974 cover. The parts list provides part number changes for all these components - cam carriers, inlet rocker shafts, cam cover, breather cover.

Presumably the increased height of the cam cover between centre sealing faces also came about to enable the necessary internal clearance for the longer cam carriers to "fit".

  Cylinder Head

There are various production changes made to VIN 1/7414 and later K0 series cylinder heads, at least 4 that we aware of.

The image below shows two specific head castings. The bottom (and cleaner) head casting is from a VIN 1 thru 7414 (sandcast), which is the "earlier" casting and the top shot is of a "later" casting. Externally, there is no way of identifying the "earlier" from the "later" casting but once the cam cover is off, it is a very easy process to identify. Main differences are:

1. Later head has no casting depression between rear head bolts.

2.Later head oil return hole more pronounced and better designed to drain oil.

3. Later head has tapered valve guide, and no provision for oil guide seal.

4. Later head has larger scallops on both sides.

Service Bulletin 42 - Cylinder Head Gasket Oil Sealing

CB750 motorcycles with engine serial numbers 2352923 and later used sealed cylinder stud knock pins. The sealed knock pins fit only engines with counter bored cylinder stud holes and cannot be used with the cylinders in engines prior to serial number 2352923.

Cylinder stud "O" Rings are available to improve oil sealing in CB-750 motorcycles with engine serial numbers 1000001 - 2352922. These "O" Rings cannot be used with cylinders in engines having serial numbers 2352923 and later.
