Strange engine number

Hi,

As you can see on the attach image, the engine number is very strange : B750GE-1004288.

The numbers (1004288) could come from a sandcast built in july of 1969 but the beginning is so unusual...

What do you think about it ?

Now that's a mighty good one !  i think this is one of the better "mysteries" we've ever seen on the forum.  Ranks right up there with the French sandcasts!  

the features of the vin pad as well as the letters and numbers are not what is normally seen on engines, much less sandcast engines.  

do you have pictures of the entire motorcycle ?  also of the clutch cover; 9 hole or 10 hole ?  

What is compelling is the stamp fonts and the vin it's self appear very clearly factory and unaltered. 

the raised periphery of that vin pad is what's seen on later diecast cases.

Quite an easy one this....
UK market (and several other European countries) CB750F2's (1977 - 1978) used different frame / engine number series to those of other countries. UK market bikes started from VIN CB750G-1000018 and engine B750GE-1000016. No idea why, as from the parts lists there appear to only be the usual differences relating to lights, switchgear, etc.

My own UK market CB750F2 has engine number B750GE-1004725 and was first registered here in September 1978, so likely built early / mid 1978.

I confirm the engine disassembled shows cambered pistons and specific camshafts.
