Best sealer for crankcase halves??

What is the preferred joining compound for cases when rebuilding bottom ends? Yamabond or Hondabond seem to be the concensus over the SOHC. Yamaha dealer is closest to me, or if there is something from Permatex, Loc-Tite etc. There are jobbers close to me as well. Just wondered what the "sandcast" folks prefer??

If weekend goes well, the cases MIGHT be going together within a couple of days. Slow progress is better than no progress! :)

I haven't had any problems with the Permatex sealer but I'm interested in other opinions too.

I haven't had any problems with the Permatex sealer but I'm interested in other opinions too.

Mark, what Permatex product do you use? This one is available at my Local "Canadian Tire Store"

I have always used Gaskacinch with excellent results but am planning to try Hondabond on my current project. The Hondabond is a little thicker.

That's not the one I've used, at least it's not packaged that way.  What I used came in a can with a brush on the cap.  I'll have to dig around in my stuff to see if I can find the old can.

The dealerships in this area use 3Bond, which is same as Yamabond or Hondabond.  I've been using 3Bond, i like it because it seals.  Parts separate readily, removes easily, doesn't bake hard, always remains elastic.

I used on my bikes the Hondabond.
Honda does two types: one for low and one for high temperadure degree.
It's gray in any case.

These all appear to be an RTV type/based sealers which would make them an "Aerobic" sealer??? I would have though that with machined case halves, an "Anaerobic Sealer" would be better suited for the job??

It was just a thought Steve. Anaerobic Sealers got popular when I was working on the bench for certain applications. As "old school" technicians we hated all these new sealing techniques! Give us back our gaskets we said!!  ;D The case halves for a SOHC just seem to be a natural place for an Anaerobic type sealer. Only pitfall is, it doesn't come in gray so all residual would have to be cleaned for a perfect look. The downside MIGHT be, that the engine may flex or contact/expand too much with the heat cycles and cause an Anaerobic sealer to crack and leak?? It's not as "forgiving" as an Aerobic/Silicone type sealer. Just throwing out a few ideas. We have lots of good heads on this board!  :)

I finally found what I’ve used in the past.  In case you can’t make out the number it’s 765-1210.  Don't know about anaerobic or not.  And the color is dark brown, almost black, not gray.  But I've never seen one with gray but I think mine already had the cases split.

That's Permatex Form A Gasket 1 Mark. It's tough stuff!

Permatex® Form-A-Gasket® No. 1 Sealant
Fast-drying, hard-setting sealant designed for sealing rigid materials and flanges, or patching holes and joints where permanent assembly is desired. Temperature range -65°F to 400°F (-54°C to 204°C); resists common shop fluids and fuels.

Suggested Applications: Freeze plugs, threaded connections, manifold gaskets

HondaBond and YamaBond are both essentially Three Bond 1194 Liquid Gasket (Grey)

ThreeBond 1194 is a semidrying liquid gasket whose major component is special synthetic rubber. After it is applied and dried, it will form a rubber-like elastic body. Since it excels in padding property, it shows a high sealing effect on bonded surfaces that have poor flatness and large clearance. In addition, it has excellent resistance to water, oil and gasoline.
