That's high praise coming from KP. He might know more than anyone else I have met!

Frankly, you have a special bike there! I'll email you and we can chat.

I am not a Facebook user. And I use to work for Facebook. Does that say anything?  :o

I have no problem with a group there of course. My suspicion is that this site will evolve into an information resource and away from a conversation destination. Frankly, that is already happening. Our numbers are very low for people posting and decent for people reading.

Again, thats fine with me! The bikes speak for themselves. I just make sure the info is available for fellow lunatics!  ;D

Ive had great luck with paintless dent repair. The dents in this tank look shallow with no creases, so I expect you will have a great result.

I would not clearcoat original paint. It's only original once.

I agree with 4pots, this is not an engine that you likely want to own!

Here's my 42 WLA. Served in WWII.

Seven year old daughter named it "Rumble-Bumble"

Pretty good name for a Harley right?

Looks like a hold was drilled above the engine number on the upper cases. Thats too bad.

I think this is trying to ride the recent wave of sandcast prices going up. I agree that it is overpriced and missing some stuff. The Hagerty article and recent BAT auctions have people willing to pay more it seems. It would not surprise me if this one went for $20k. It presents well; it only take lunatics like us to poke holes in it! :)

Assuming the problem is on the surface of the clear coat, you could wetsand it out and then re-polish. Start with 1000 grit and go slow. Then go to 2000. Then compound and finally polish. Be very careful around edges as you will burn through the clear coat very quickly. Pays to go slow.

Great news about the exhaust and the rear rim. Both are tough to find. You found a gem!

As far as the engine and frame numbers, it is not common to have the numbers so far apart (take a look at the VIN registry). BUT, it's certainly not impossible (you'll see some in the same registry for example). As KP and Hondasan point out, there are examples of bikes with wider-than-normal number spreads. The fact that you don't see evidence of the engine ever being out of the frame is a great sign. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter.

My hope is that you will put your skills to bring this bike back to life!
