The Beginning / Re: Caswells tank liner removal
« on: November 25, 2019, 09:25:00 pm »
i don't recall removal of caswells epoxy tank liner being discussed on the forum.  and a search for any such info i cannot find if it has been discussed on the forum.

i have a steel tank where someone did shit for prep if they even prepped at all, as the caswells has let loose and now  is in essence a clear, thin, brittle "bag" inside the tank.  i broke out what fragments i could and have it soaking in mek to no avail.  somewhere i got it in m brain methylene chloride removes caswells, so i have a gallon of the stuff on it's way to my man cave.

fwiw, the liner fragments have flakes of rust  impregnated in the caswells and when i rub my finger on the inside surface of the tank, i can feel it knocking off rust flakes and my finger tip comes out rusty red.

i've spent the last couple days surfing the 'net looking for info on what is used to remove caswells and all i find is out-gassing blather of keyboard commando's.

now as i am writing this, it "seems" i am recalling perhaps maybe i might of actually contacted caswells and that's perhaps where i got the idea the chemical used is methylene chloride.

my question is: "does anyone have experience removing caswells epoxy tank liner?"

on a side note, reading http://cb750sandcastonly.com/smf_forum/index.php/topic,275.msg1498.html#msg1498 smeone asked what removes old dried varnished gasoline from a gas tank.  Zip-Strip Paint Remover or at least it used to.  i guess Zip-Strip no longer has methylene chloride as one of its active ingredients and it was several years ago i used Zip-Strip to remove a 3/4" layer of rock hard dried gas from the tank that was on 2157.  dried gas immediately turns to goo when hit by Zip-Strip or at least the Zip-Strip from i used around 10 years ago.

They don't dress like pro racers, but they are really leaned over.  I did enjoy the pic.  Thanks.

yes, until this pic, i can't recall probably stock 750's leaned that far over.  the first thing i thought of is one bug in the eye much less no helmets.

Sam. The new format looks great! Nice job! I was checking in during that ever so long update process. Like I said, I figured it would take a while but we must have had startlogic's MySQL Server smoking!  ;D ;D Thanks to everyone for the accolades and support over the years. It was fun and a pleasure getting to know some good people on this board. I wish Sam and the members all the best with the site. I have passed off my work in progress, my vision for the site to Sam and I'm here any time should he want to bounce  something off me. He's taken on a beast, a huge vault of information. I'm confident he'll get it into a format that will take the site to the next level. Cheers

Wayne, SOOC may not have survived without your diligence, persistence and perseverance.   i applaud you and what you have done during the time you managed the site and when you updated the forum.  Thank you for your service and willingness to still help SOOC as Sam moves forward.

Uli, thank you for your thoughts, they are valid.  I may be mistaken, but i believe changing the web address would not be an easy undertaking, it would require a whole new domain and migrating information to another domain creates a number of major considerations and very time consuming if even at all possible.

in the matter of things K0, years ago, when i was the sooc manager, Wayne Telford use his very able talents to create a topic on the forum for K0.  Since that time interest has been and remains minimal.  While i favor inclusiveness, the original intent of the site was for sandcast only, and speaking only for myself,  for a number of reasons, i believe that is where the primary purpose of SOOC should remain.

Furthermore, i want to be very careful to not cross boundaries with Sam Roberts who is in charge of any changes to the forum or the actual website.  After Sam took over, i specifically requested him to remove my administrative privileges, so i am now a member among members and nothing else.  i do not intend to give this thread any more life than it already has, more than anything else, given my ignorance of cyber media was curious as to why participate on facebook and less so on SOOC.  Sam is doing a great job, Wayne did a great job and i do not want to interfere with their work, only contribute as i can.  The sooner this topic dies off, the happier i'll be.

All this being said, as things are, the presence of a sandcast facebook is what it is and people use facebook for reasons you mention and other reasons as well.  Beyond that, when the website went live December 24, 2004, i put a lot  of myself to get the website ready to go online, many hours to have some worthwhile information on the website and last and least of all the generous financial help from KP McGovern and Chris Rushton to pay for someone to develop the website.  In the beginning, i made the incorrect assumption that anyone joining SOOC would have the same amount of passion that i had for the CB750 sandcast, which i learned is not the case.  I think it only natural, especially back in 2004, when the internet was still a relatively new phenomenon, that i not only felt a responsibility to the sandcast motorcycle, and to the membership as it developed and so i felt i needed to be protective of if not a bit possessive of SOOC, at least in the beginning because i truly wanted to SOOC to have all the participation other members were willing to offer.  I've always tried to keep my ego out of things, but it's only human to have a little bit of my ego invested in anything i do as all that i do is a reflection of who i am and how people are treated and i want to be treated.  i learned a lot throughout the process.   To be perfectly honest, i felt rather annoyed and disgusted when people used and now far less so now when so-called members still use SOOC for their personal gain and little or nothing else.  Furthermore, perhaps you can imagine my surprise learning sandcast facebook was started by fellow member Marcello Tha and there was no communication to that effect.   As i mentioned before, after helping Marcello with parts, i accidentally stumbled on to the facebook he started, so, i believe it's only human to have some mixed feelings such as i have had.  (Apparently, when Marcello made his  2014 thread herein announcing he had started the facebook site i missed his posting the the thread).

In any event, this thread has been another part of the process for me completely letting go of SOOC.  I intend to let this topic and this thread die.  While i have many fond memories as a young man taking ownership of 4779, September 30, 1969, that created a passion strong enough to start this website, i have a number of other interests that take my time and energy.  i'm going to focus on being a member among fellow members and positively contribute when or where i can.

thanks for your reply, KP.  sooc having a facebook page might not be a bad idea, but then we have 3 venues for information being in 3 different places.  it's challenge enough getting the info on sooc website and sooc forum in one place, much less coherent.  the "Distinction" page is one example of that.  i started it but couldn't keep up with it and then it spiraled more or less out of control by subsequent very welcome discoveries fellow members contributed.  i guess my overall goal is to support Sam as much as is realistically possible for me to do.  He has taken on a huge project.  for example, this new forum is great.

General Discussion / Re: facebook sandcast

just joined sandcast facebook and spoke my piece, as per below.

"It’s pretty much water under the bridge that around 2013 or so that I helped then new SOOC member Marcello Tha locate various difficult to find parts including a round bead rear rim and sold him a “28” carb kit when he was getting his sandcast together.
Quite some time ago, when I was still managing SOOC, I was surprised and disappointed to learn Marcello had started this site without prior sharing his desire, intention, motivation or reasoning behind starting this facebook site.  Don’t get me wrong, no one needs my permission to do whatever they want on the internet.

I would like to hear from SOOC members active on this facebook site so I can understand what motivates them to participate here and less so or not at all on SOOC.  I’d appreciate hearing your thoughts and will pass them on verbatim to Sam Roberts who has taken over SOOC website management.

I would also like to understand why folks here, who own a sandcast, don’t join SOOC or if they did join SOOC, would rather participate on facebook instead of SOOC.
I have my own ideas about why facebook and not or less so SOOC, but I’d rather hear yours.
Thank you for your polite and courteous replies."

i was going post the following on sandcast facebook when i realized i would be required to join, so i thought i would post here what i was going to post there.

"It’s pretty much water under the bridge that around 2013 or so that I helped Marcello Tha locate a round bead rear rim and sold him a “28” carb kit when when he was getting his sandcast together.  A year or two ago, I was surprised to hear about the facebook site and frankly disappointed Marcello started a facebook site for sandcasts without prior discussion for his motivation or reasoning behind starting the facebook site.  Not that any individual member needs permission to start a sandcast facebook site, it just seems like a courtesy could have been extended to discuss what might be his concerns with or how SOOC could be improved.

In any event, in my search for understanding ways SOOC can be improved so more members participate on SOOC, and rather than make incorrect assumptions, I would like to understand what motivates long time and well known SOOC members to participate on facebook and not contribute to SOOC.  Lack of participation certainly was not for my not asking for help and beseeching fellow member’s participation.  In certain cases of SOOC member activity on facebook, certain SOOC members’ participation on SOOC is only when they place “Parts Wanted” ads on SOOC.

I would also like to understand the reasoning for folks who own a sandcast, and prefer facebook to SOOC."

i realize i may need ask sandcast facebook to let me join.  Given i have to joinsandcast facebook to express the preceding thoughts, I thought I'd start out here and then consider what my next decision might be.

as i am curious and would like to know why people, especially longstanding members participate on sandcast facebook, i am going to make my first post over there soon to hear what these folks can share.  understanding why people use facebook more and SOOC less or not at all can perhaps only be of benefit to SOOC.

Repro Decals makes good products.  if you have a decal you want made, they'll make it or at least that was the case 10+ years ago when they made decals for my little 1965 Yamaha YG1-K Rotary Jet 80 i restored.

i've been aware for quite some time of this facebook site.  i find it interesting what must have motivated Marcello to start a different forum independent and separate from SOOC which at times struggles to garner consistent, active and meaningful interest in things sandcast.  I'll be honest.  Frankly, i feel it is a bit of betrayal on the parts of SOOC members who started this facebook site and contribute to it.  When Marcello was putting his sandcast together, i helped him procure some rather hard to find parts to make his project correct and basically, it seems to me what SOOC gets in return is various members' desertion from SOOC and  other so called members of SOOC actively participating on facebook and not on SOOC.  This type of behavior does not support Sam and his efforts, and does not support SOOC.  For me, this behavior is even worse than some long time members whose only "contributions" are when they post "wanted, looking for parts," and others who "join" SOOC to show off their sandcast discovery using SOOC as an advertising medium and disappear after they get the attention and good will they came looking for.  There's likely a part of facebook i just don't understand, seeing Yamiya joined so i suppose facebook creates a presence for an advertising medium and others who perhaps don't have a sandcast and still others who don't get from SOOC what they apparently get from facebook.  as a facebook member on an antique Harley-Davidson forum, i get the convenience and quickness of posting and messaging.  oh well.  Enjoy what you like; Live and Let Live.

The documentation makes reference to new side cover/s, also refers to replacing exhaust with a 1972 system The bike was purchase used with 5764 miles on it so prior to that one would never know. The documentation seems to be typed as one exercise but the records could easily have been written and then typed.
The bike looks to be cared for by one very very very fastidious owner. The bike looks to be original in that the carbs still have the 28 caps, original smooth ferule oil lines, instruments have that nice new texture, that brake pedal looks totally original and not showing corrosion. The airbox looks original including a crack. Reference is made to a crack repair/s. The headlight shell has the tell-tale of some fading beginning
There are a few incorrect parts but these are obviously maintenance type things such as airbox rubbers
At some time the brake disc caliper has seized but this would be expected given the time alone
To me this is the best presented, and if correctly stated, unrestored bike we've seen since that low mile one of Vic's. If I had the cash I buy this bike in a heartbeat, replace the exhaust if I could find one, put a few other things back to original, place said bike in a nitrogen filled big bag, under cover and leave it, bringing it out only to show off to you lot  ;D
I think this is a bike Marty should buy. What you say Marty  ;)

KP, thanks for your eval based on what you spotted with your eagle eyes and read in the ad.  would have helped if i'd taken the time to read the ad.  yeah, Marty should buy this one.
