Title: Not a scam but you should know.
Post by: chrisnoel on July 21, 2010, 10:47:49 pm
I know some of us like to score those recessed ignitions on e-bay that came on other than CB750's.  It sure is a thrill to get a very valuable ignition for less than $20.00 once in a while.  Beware of the CL175 recessed ignitions though as they are not the same as the ones we covet.  I see one for sale on ebay right now and I asked about the housing on the back.  Sure enough it is the plastic housing that I have seen once before luckily.  If someone pays a hundred or two for that thing I bet they are going to be UPSET.  I suppose if they can find the H code plug keys for it it'll pass off on a sandcast but I'd hate to be the one stuck with it.

Good luck scrounging, Chris.

Chris, thanks for the heads up.  I haven't seen the auction but if they are passing it off as a sandcast part I would say it is a scam.

They have it listed as a CL175 ignitions and I'm willing to bet they don't even have a clue what a recessed ignition is.  Could become a scam though if who ever gets it tries to flip it to get thier money back.  I'll have to take a mental note of the key code and watch out for it.

The switch ended up selling for just under $200.00. The switch would have been a nice addition to either my 1969 SL 350 or CL 175. I don't believe the winning bidder bought the matching fork lock that was in another auction. The plug key for this ignition was also on ebay. Marty K.

Another CL175 ignition up for sale.  This time it is a false sandcast claim.  Kinda pricey too, so I'm sure it'll rot away in no bid limbo.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/RECESSED-SANDCAST-IGNITION-KEY-SWITCH-FORK-LOCK-SET-1969-HONDA-CB750-K0-H7088-/160853163984?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2573987fd0&vxp=mtr (http://www.ebay.com/itm/RECESSED-SANDCAST-IGNITION-KEY-SWITCH-FORK-LOCK-SET-1969-HONDA-CB750-K0-H7088-/160853163984?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2573987fd0&vxp=mtr)

How do you know it's for a CL175?  Thanks for the heads up again.

First one I found was on a CL175 in a Greeley Colorado junk yard.  Tried to sell it on ebay as a curriosity but ended up selling it to a fellow sandcastonly member with disclosure.  Next one I saw for sale was on e-bay from a CL175 as well.  Not saying they couldn't have ended up on other models but I wouldn't put one on a sandcast unless I got it for cheap and didn't want to spend the money for a T... code recessed ignition.  The plastic housing on the back is the real dead give away but when I also tried fitting it to my Sandcast I found that it had less threads for the hardware.  You'd have to leave off some of the original hardware to get it to fit right.

Truth is they are probably much more rare than the T code recessed but I havn't seen a web site dedicated to the 1969 CL175 yet so I don't think the CL175 guys are hunting for them.

One of my memorable snags was buying a 1969 CB175 w/ 900 miles on it; had T3546 lock and switch w/ 2 keys.  Came from the now defunct Franklin Cycle in Greeley.  Another memorable snag was buying an early CB750 K1 roller for $50 that had a dent/rust free 17 litre wrinkle tank.

I remember the owner telling me about the motorcycles he sold to you as he was selling me the CL ignition.  I was kicking myself for not driving to Greeley sooner.

Don't know how they guy missed it but the pic clearly shows the H code on the key and the ignition.  The listing is calling it a T code.

Less threads for the lock ring and plastic housing on back.  If you must have it I can fix it though.  Can't fix that it's wrong, just the condition.

I think someone is pulling this sellers leg so I'm sure he's not intentionally being misleading.  Obviously the stems are wrong but look how low the stem enters the back of the mirror.  These are not PAT/HM mirror backs that will work for a CB750 at all.  Most likely came from a very small displacement machine.  Being informed is at least a fraction of the battle.

This mirrors is a scam...  Well, at least the seller is wrong and doesn't know it.  be aware of HM PAT logo mirrors that have the stem too far off center.  If the HM is residing in a narrower space than would be expected on any CB750 that's because it came from a much smaller CC machine.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/121592265410?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.com/itm/121592265410?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)
