One of the best seats seen on ebay in the last year, but needs sponge restoration.
-
Wow! I saw that! Nice sale MarkT. That should fund some restoration.
Keep those prices up ... unless I'm buying.

insane. a late seat for $1819. crazy. fickle. i sold a seat better than that on ebay around 5 yrs.ago. i put i on auction 3 times and wound up finally getting around $400 for it.
-
Amazing. Anyone have any theories on what made this one so desirable?

IMHO, I'd say 2 bidders intent on wanting that seat. These crazy prices are generally reached when you have a couple of birders intent on winning the item. I've seen round profile rims reach these crazy prices when birders try to outbid each other, yet a month later a round profile rim fetches half the same amount. That's eBay

I think KP is right. People get caught up in the moment on Ebay just as they would at a "live" auction. I can't complain, I have sold a lot of items there and got far more than I expected in some cases. Different story when I'm buying. I set my "snipe" at the maximum I have set in my mind for the item and I forget it. If i win great, if I don't another one will come along. Sometimes you just have to be patient.

Here goes another one!

I was bidder in the auction of the Gold Seat.
I've stopped me as soon i've seen the crazy trend of he auction.
I cannot pay this prices.
Is very stupid invest in a seat the 10% of final value of the bike.

I purchased another seat on eBay in the last days:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/280820019954?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/280820019954?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)
Received today, this is a very nice seat....perfect skin 8), like new :o, perfect pan :o with no important rust sposts......
but the sponge is in "so so" status, very friable :'( :'(.
What to do? ???
Replace the sponge, restore the sponge with new sponge inserts or remain the seat as it is, for a show unrestored bike? ??? ??? ??? ???
I submit you, dear friends, this my question. :-\ :-\ :-\

If you're going to ride it, the foam will break sooner than later and crumble everywhere.
If you're not going to ride it and can live with the broken down external appearance, that is good.
If you cannot live with the broken down appearance, replacement of the old foam will have to be addressed.
Original old foam was not one solid piece of foam. Original foam was made up of thin, tall blocks, the blocks glued together with open (air) spaces between blocks.
With the seat flipped up, one can see the blocks and open (air) spaces.
If originality of appearance is required, then the blocks must be reproduced. If restored to look original, one solid piece of foam is not acceptable.
Yamiya makes one piece original type red foam, but not blocks.
Perhaps red foam could be found and blocks cut and glued like original. Then make the original contour of seat using layers of red foam padding on top of the blocks.
In order to do this, one would need an original example.
And, to confound, we know all seats' foam are not created equal. There are different contours between early and late sandcast seats. It is safe to say, there is a difference between shapes of the foam blocks ? I believe all sandcast seats used red foam only. Anyone know different ?
Perhaps "K0" foam is cut different, using layers of foam and fewer blocks and using white and red foam.
Many questions i do not have the answer for.

I agree with Mr Swan. Leave the seat alone and use it for show purposes. Buy a Yamiya seat to ride with. Damn fine seat that is for sure. Keep it as is else send it to me and I will look after it for you :D

I've restored another early seat, red sponge structure and few holes pan.
But the sponge was better than this.
I'm tempted to restore also this but.........where to find the same red sponge in block to cut and where to find red sponge skin?
A very Hamletic doubt!!!
