Pretty sure nitro-cellulose was not used from 1969 (per CB750's) onward. No durability as can be seen in all the funky repaints that faded and washed off from fuel spills in the 1960's, 1970's, with or without clear, which was also lacquer. Easy to use, quick drying paint to shoot in the driveway, or under a tree!

I'd hunch we are seeing acrylic enamel on an original CB750, a much more durable finish the auto industry, and collision repair places were using then. Also, not seeing clearcoat over original candy red or candy blue CB750 K0 paint.

Far as I know, the only body work that Honda clear-coated early on were CB92 parts, front fender, tank and body side covers, which were all aluminum on early CB92s, also the first thousand or so CL72s..

Paint - Badges and Component Refinishing / Re: Your Tank Striping is Wrong
« on: December 21, 2020, 05:41:40 pm »
I sent my sandcast tank to a painter a couple of weeks ago. I took along an original paint wrinkle tank for layout and technique. I'm not sure what others are seeing, but with no prompting my painter said, "Sure. We paint it red, then put on the black base stripe. Next we mask for the gold." But as he looked closely he said, "That gold stripe has subtle brush marks, it's put on with a wide brush! And there's no clear coat on the gold" And I said I agreed as I'd been staring at how the gold had a sort of "coagulated" look to it I have seen in brushed on metallics since I was painting stuff over 60 years ago.. Anybody see what I see? Anyway, that's what I'm going with.....

Thanks, Sam! I just sent the seller a note. Fingers crossed.
Do you live near the seller? South of San Jose a bit.....
I really appreciate your forwarding this.

I need a "4 Dimple" tank for my CB750 #1001863. Will pay your price for a good tank. VERY minor dents OK. Some inside rust OK. Correct cap would be good, not necessary. I have the petcock & trim. THANKS! -motormark-
