General Discussion / Re: Should i drill clutch basket holes
« on: November 01, 2019, 12:33:15 pm »
Thanks for reply.  Yeah, i'll take that advice.  Wasn't sure how common the mod would be for a 69.
I wonder when Honda started to pre-drill holes.
In meantime, i re-installed old 'clean-up' clutch and a new cable.  Struggling getting the adjustment right.
I'll mess around with it again this weekend.
BTW, riding my sandcast up and down the highway is easily one of the greatest joys of my motorcycle ridin life.  It runs sweet with a surprising amount of pull through the gears.  Much more than my 75 ever had.  I just can't stop smiling when riding this thing.  Too bad the snow is going to fly soon.   Cheers.

General Discussion / Should i drill clutch basket holes
« on: October 31, 2019, 03:15:51 pm »
Hi all,
My clutch was a bit grabby when hot, so i removed it and cleaned and roughed up the friction plates and soaked them in 20w 50 oil.  I also wanted to drill extra holes in the clutch basket to improve oil flow but discovered that it has no circulation holes.  Perhaps only the later cb750's had pre-drilled holes from the factory?   Has anyone else done the 'hondaman' suggested mod and drilled holes in their clutch basket to improve performance?  I'm a bit reluctant to drill holes in an original part but will consider doing it if its a common modification.   It's a late model sandcast and a Sunday runner re  10068**.  Thanks.

a pic from 6806.  The parts have since been cleaned up, but a similar rough finish.

Front End and Suspension / Rear shock talk
« on: March 12, 2019, 01:37:17 pm »
Hello all.  I wanted to disassemble my rear shocks for cleaning.  This led to a discussion.  It looks like my shocks are from a K2 or later since no black tops -  my bike is late model sandcast Vin 10068**.   I note that Yamiya sell a black top replica set, but they also list a rear 'short type' replica shock for 1969 that's all chrome like mine.   Did 'short type' exist in 1969? There seems to be a variety of different rear shocks found on restored sandcast projects.  For ex., recent mag 'Classic Bike' Honda CB750 50 yr anniversary article shows a sandcast with rear shocks with no chrome cap over spring.  I read some of your previous threads on this.  Anyway, what do you think. Are 'short type' replica shocks merely for the modern day vertically challenged or were they an option back in the day?

Front End and Suspension / Re: fork damper valve

Thanks.  I removed cir clip, and pulled upper section from the fork bottom.  Then I removed allen bolt on bottom of fork so I could remove lower pipe for cleaning.  Reassembled with fresh oil.

I'm replacing fork seals which are weeping a bit. KO Vin 10068**
I read a warning by Hondaman in his book not to remove bottom fork allen bolts because of reassembly issues.  I'd like to clean up lower internals, but not sure if that's possible with KO forks?   Thanks.

I'll jump in too and take a set - but i have a much later sandcast

Parts Wanted / Need bottom 1/2 of KO RH Switch
« on: March 17, 2011, 09:37:56 pm »
I need the bottom half portion for my KO right-hand switch, with starter button, for an early single throttle cable.  I thought i would give this a try since I'm not having much luck finding an oem or correct reproduction switch for my sandcast.  I was hoping someone would have parts from an old switch kickin around that they might be willing to sell.  I don't have many parts to offer in exchange other than later K4 and K5 bar switches, and a single cut front fender, circa 1970, with supports.
The bottom of my RH switch must have been replaced with the bottom half of a later 'pull-push' switch.   I attach a picture of the underside of my switch.
Thanks.

Lighting Systems and Chassis Electrical / Re: LH switch reproduction

the top finish is beautiful but no way to polish out the bottom piece - i tried it on a buffer wheel.  It has a web like finish of rough metallic fragments in the anodized surface that can't be polished smooth.  - i'll send it back.

This replacement LH switch, F 031, arrived from Yamiya.
I sent them a pic of the rough flat-black finish on the underside, this is the answer I got.

...."Thank you for your inquiry.
1. The OEM item of HONDA is such finish altogether about two years before.
Therefore, our website has also carried such a photograph.
We checked to HONDA before.
I think that the factory was changed into China from Japan.
Even if you send it, we stock only the thing of such finish."

Is the LH switch i received a good repro of the original? That seems to be what Yamiya are suggesting or perhaps I'm misunderstanding their reply.  My old switch is faded at bottom but not rough.  Rob, #6806

KP - this is a pic of a lower hose from #6806.   I'd like to order your lower hose and fittings.  Do you think it will work?
Thanks

Wondering about brake line reproductions for sandcast models post 2157.
The '88 differences' states that post 2158 fittings were long neck brake hose fittings, not short, - and that early sandcasts had upper brake hose steel neck fittings that were straight,1-2157 (late production has bend, like mine I guess- please see pic).
I'd like to clean up my front hoses and fittings on 6806 and would really like to use KP's reproductions - would your lower hoses work for 6806?
I attached a couple of pics for reference.

Front End and Suspension / Re: fork gaitor replacement comparison

I'm glad i asked.  It surprised me when i removed the old boots and they were so different from the 51611-300-000 pair i ordered.  It made me doubt whether i had ordered the rights ones.  But my replacement boots look like the Yamiya set pictured and also the set link posted by KP, so that's good.  But now I wonder why my bike had an incorrect set installed in the first place. - probably not from Honda.
The stories these bikes could tell i guess.  Maybe a few more stories will become evident as i slowly try to get the bike back on the road.
Thanks.
