I studied the photos and never saw a clear picture of the speedo drive gear, I found it odd that the  seller omitted this angle. The speedo is the key to help authenticate the mileage of the bike.

Wow, a rare built in California Sandcast  with a 10 hole clutch cover not the 11 hole clutch type (very  rare).
The seller needs to spend some time on the SOOC site to better understand the details of this Sandcast  ::)
Claims to have 2k original miles, take a look,  Lots of questions arise with the claimed miles.

Steve,
Digging through the threads, I cannot find a working link to the Ray Bayless DVD covering the 2009 AMA VMD.
Do you know if copies of the DVDs are still available somewhere?
Thanks much,
Duane

Review of VIN'S For Directory / Re: Frame & Engine Number Spread

I am in agreement with KP, from the limited data we have available, frames and engines in the 3,000-4,000 ranges seem to have the largest spreads in some pairing. Mid-June to July production. Data is still very limited.

3,000-4,000 Frame/ Engine range is where you will see mixed thin lip and thick lip clutch covers installed and oil lines changed from smooth ferrules to deeper crimped connections. The Frame mounting of the horn changed to the right side in this production period.

DW

Sending these photos as a reminder to how the factory was operating in 1969., as frames and engines are paired.
Credit to Tom Courtney-!

I always wonder how many are sitting around in other staging places before final assembly.

Good stuff KP!

I have always held the belief that frames are easy  and predictable to manufacture, not many moving components. Engines assemblies have hundreds of moving components supplied by different vendors, many things can go wrong.

Thinking more engines were built and needed repairs than frames.

Honda CB750 K3 have some of the widest Frame/Engine spreads, some in the 1,000 (maybe off topic), but sure is interesting to note.

Links to Auctions and Classifieds / Re: Sandcast 3088 / E2414 on eBay

Well, I have a different opinion than Sam on this Sandcast pairing. As well.

Studying Sandcast engine top crankcase casting dates:
From June 2, 1969 through June 24, in a period of 22 days, 1,358 engines were cast, averaging 62 engines per day over this time period.

I believe June was the highest month of Sandcast engine production for these special engines.
If Honda produced 62 engines a day as the daily average for the period of April through September 1969, there would have been around 11,000 engines total cast. We know that only 7,414 were stamped, some scrapped, some used as replacements, but total production not this high.

Our VIN directory contains very few top engine casting dates, but the data I used to pull this information was from the directory. E2241 top casting date is 6-2 and E3599 is 6-24 a difference of 1,358. Lots of missing top casting dates, but I know for a fact other engines have June casting dates that fall outside this range. E1685 as an example has a 6-23 top casting date.

Something happened in the E31XX range as very few of these engine show up. 3088 would have likely/probably should have an E31XX number give or take.

In our directory 3043 is paired with 2765 with 6-13 cast date, 3045 is paired with E2718 with 6-11 cast date.

On eBay 3088 is paired with E2414, I believe this sure could be a factory paired engine, as June produced high numbers of engines., in fact probably more engines than frames, but we will never know, just an opinion.

We continue to learn more as data surfaces, fact is, we need more Sandcast owners to update their top crankcase casting dates to better understand these pairing.

Best,
DW

Great information KP!
I have always assumed the no number buckets with the small round hole was for the Sandcast, and the design was changed to open up the hole for greater wiring clearance at some point in production.

Brakes / Re: Brake Pressure Switch
« on: May 18, 2020, 08:59:36 am »
Hi KP,
Attached is a picture of my unmolested Sandcast (you know which bike). If I understand your question correctly, the switch is definitely black with plain zinc. I also examined my other unmolested Sandcast and it is also black with plain zinc plating. (Can attach pics of other bike  if you would like to see more)
If you need more pictures just let me know.
Best,
Duane

Thanks for sharing the photos, definitely period correct for late 70's.
Curious what is the frame VIN number?
Will be stamped in left side of the down tube and on the VIN plate on the right hand side of the steering head.
Thanks,
DW
