Front End and Suspension / Fork Q?'s
« on: March 20, 2021, 04:24:32 pm »
Does anyone know how long the sandcast style forks were used on the diecast or 70 model bikes? I know they were 450 size for the seals. I'm assuming my 14,000 should have them.

Fenders (mudguards) and Seats / double cut Q?
« on: February 07, 2021, 02:25:42 pm »
I was on ebay looking at the Vietnam double cut front fenders. I see different prices and wonder if there is a quality difference and how they compare to Yamiya.   Any recent experience?

Everything K0 / reflector repro's?
« on: January 04, 2021, 01:24:12 pm »
Has anyone found a source of Honda or even a good reproduction fork ear reflector and rubber for K0's?  I'm getting the feeling the threads are rusted inside my fork ears. Rather than break them,  I'd prefer to leave them in place and get new ones for the gold tin set.

Engine Mechanical / carb body with a fingerprint?
« on: October 17, 2019, 10:49:02 pm »
Has anyone actually seen the carb body with a fingerprint in the casting or is it an urban myth?  If real what carbs had it?

Everything K0 / Found another one, late K0 project.
« on: October 22, 2018, 11:16:22 pm »
I found a 6/70 K0 and got the deal done.  It's looking a bit unloved right now but has good bones and most of the hard to find parts. Single cut fender, post wrinkle tank, solid seat pan, a little rust from living in a tarp garage but most of it's polishing away.

Everything K0 / Grey area engines?
« on: October 04, 2017, 06:34:36 pm »
I'll attempt to post some pics, when they download to google. I have two 1970 unnumbered replacement engine cases. Both have the 10 bolt clutch cover, one has the added bolt (3) in the sprocket area and smooth painted cases, the other has a coarser texture that looks just like 5511, a thin frame around the blank number pad, 3 punch marks, and only two bolts in the sprocket area. Both have casting numbers within the hex like a die cast engine.
I know it isn't a true "sandcast" but I can't help wonder if they continued using the early process to make the updated engine type for a short time. There is a clear difference in the castings.

One of these engines is destined for 14,100 It's a resto mod, keeping it's Lester mags, the exhaust is still undecided but it should make a nice bookend to 5511. I would love to know how to read the dates in the casting numbers.

Gauges - Levers and Cables / Gauge repair tutorial?
« on: September 21, 2017, 10:38:54 pm »
I recently bought a sweet speedo here and found a nice tach on sohc4.net. The tach has a great case but a lousy lens. I've collected a few parts from our friendly gauge guy, facebook and Ebay. I have 2 cases, lenses and K0 faceplates. I originally planned to redo a couple K1 gauges to appear K0 but that's not needed now.

Anyway my question is, aside from a few tips here and there is there a tutorial anywhere on taking the plastic body gauges apart and putting them back together? If not maybe I'll sharpen my posting skills and give it a try.

Brakes / upper hose Q?
« on: April 07, 2017, 12:42:17 am »
During a recent conversation it has come to my attention that I probably don't have the correct upper brake hose for 5511. There was an over length hose on it (tall handlebars) when I bought it and I bought new Honda bars but I believe I put on the best used brake hose in the shop at the time.

5511 I believe had a rubber cover but would the top end fitting be straight or curved? and where best to get one?

 My first attempt at conversion.
  stock,

I got a little porosity and it's a little too round on the corner but not so bad for a first try.

General Discussion / differences in heads Q?
« on: February 28, 2017, 08:46:37 pm »
I bought some sandcast and diecast engine parts recently and while repairing some fin damage I've noticed the very early heads have softer aluminum that bends easily without cracking. This metal appears similar to later heads like the K5 head I repaired that had bent fins with no cracking. In between, there are heads that are more brittle, these fins snap off rather than bend.
The difference that I can see is, the brittle in between heads have vertical strengthening pins that protrude through the lower fins. The softer metal heads have the pins cast into the fins and are smooth on the underside. I see the protruding pins on 5511, my early k1 and late K1 heads, The non protruding pins on a #500 era sandcast head and K2/K3 and up. These types may have been used at the same time too I don't have any other serial numbers to check.  I have two no center bolt heads that have the protruding pins.

I have one of each of the two types of heads to use on 2695, I'm not sure which is correct of if either could be OK.

Exhaust / DSS no number pipes report
« on: February 09, 2017, 01:11:08 am »
I got a set of David Silver Spares no number pipes today. The price was close to Yamiya but shipping in the US was a lot lower $250 vs $18.  I previously got a set from mach IV motors off ebay, which I suspected to be Yamiya's. The two sets appear the same, the mach IV pipes were packed in foam while the DSS were packed in newspaper and cardboard. The DSS have an oriental logo on the box and Yamiya instructions inside so I assume they are the same product. I always wondered if they were.
The DSS pipes arrived in perfect condition, the mach IV pipes had a few very small scratches all in places that can't be easily seen. Possible were seconds.  I haven't tried to install them yet so I can't comment on fitment but if there are any issues I'll take pictures.

Parts For Sale / early cyl head
« on: January 08, 2017, 07:44:24 pm »
I bought a sandcast head to put on E2695, it turns out to be a pre #563 head, I'd like to assemble 2695 and either find someone that needs it for a bike or an appropriate frame to put it. That said, I'd be willing to trade this head to someone that needs it too. Picture shows it as purchased, It had a stuck exhaust valve and now has a NOS guide in that location.

Engine Mechanical / cam chain guide
« on: November 14, 2016, 06:34:33 pm »
I got reminded there are early and late cam chain guides today. The cylinder on 2695 wouldn't sit flat, the late guide was binding up in the crankcase. It took me a couple hours to remember there are 2 different ones. 69-72 and 73-up.
