The Beginning / Frozen - Siezed Oil Filter Bolt
« on: March 05, 2010, 02:17:41 pm »
I thought I would pop some new oil into my machine, do a compression test and take some pictures of the oil filter housing while I'm at it. Problem, the oil filter bolt is frozen / seized solid! I'm afraid of twisting the threads out of the case. Has anyone experienced this? I have soaked around the bolt head with penetrating fluid however that doesn't do much good down deeper in the threaded area.

Tips on Board Functions / Adding Images to Your Post
« on: March 04, 2010, 09:49:35 am »
There are two ways to add an image to your post. One is referred to as "hot linking", the second method is to upload your picture to our server.

Hot linking is when you are "linking" to an image that is housed on a remote server like PhotoBucket etc. This method works great and is simple. Just click on the "Picture" icon, second row, second image from the left. When you mouse-over it the tool tip says "Insert Image". When you click it, it will insert code in your post like this:

img][/img] (I removed a bracket so the code would display)

To add your image you just fill in the URL where the image is located. (not the whole web page, just the image) if you are on a web site and want to know the URL of the image, just click the right mouse button on the image and click "Properties". A window will open with the image information, including the URL location if the image. Highlight that url with your mouse and "copy". (hold control down on your keyboard and press "C") (some browswers have a "Copy URL function) To insert the URL into the code make sure your cursor is between the tho middle image brackets and paste the URL. (hold down control on your keyboard and press "V") Your code will now look like this:

img]http://http://whateverURLtheImageIsAt.jpg[/img] (I removed a bracket so the code would display)

The only problem with adding images to the board in this fashion is if the image is removed from the remote server, the company (such as PhotoBucket) closes down etc. the image is lost and cannot be retrieved. That leaves a void in the post here. The preffered method of posting an image is to attach it, or upload it to our server. That way it is preserved forever in our backups.

To upload an image follow these steps. First, make sure your image is is larger than 1200 KB. If you do not have software to edit your image you can do it here for free: http://www.shrinkpictures.com (you can do a 65 x 65 avatar there as well) Once you have your image ready and you have completed your post you will see under the post window "Additional Options". Click on that and you will see a number of additional options for your post. The one we are interested in here is the "Attach" function. Simply hit the "Browse" button and search for the image you want to attach to your post on your hard drive. If you have more than one attachment, click "more attachments" after your fist image is added and a send box will appear. You can add up to 10 images per post. If yu have more than 10, just do another reply to the thread and add your additional images. Note: Attachments will not show in the preview function and will take time to upload once you click "Post".

Tips on Board Functions / Terminology in Posts
« on: March 03, 2010, 10:42:38 pm »
A problem I see more and more on BB today is the use of slang and improper terminolgy when posting. Here's a wild example.

Title
I Gotta Crazy Set of Stoppers - Whaddya Think?

Content:
I got these binders that are some weird lookin. The got a fin that sticks way out....bla bla you get the idea.

Now imagine that this post went on and there was actually something useful and valid in there that the member become interested in, thus a pretty good thread unfolds.

Here's the problem. The title might attract attention initially and members may read and respond but down the road when someone does a search for "Brake Caliper Fin" guess what thread is not going to appear? Yes, those Crazy Set of Stoppers are buried somewhere.

When you post, post like you would search it. In the business we call them "keywords" and some companies have a list that people must use when they document information so the data can easliy be retrieved. I don't think we need to get into that here. Just plunk the right words in the title and the description should compliment that.

Tips on Board Functions / Customizing Your profile Information
« on: March 03, 2010, 10:24:55 pm »
There area few things you can do to customize your profile. Just click on the "Profile" tab at the top of the board. In the left column you will see a link under the heading: "Modify Profile" named "Forum Profile Information". It is here that you can add your signature, avatar, web site information if you have one etc. One thing that eveyone should do is to add your "Signature" as you would like it to appear at the bottom of each post you make. I sized mine at 12 pt. so the code would look like this:

[*size=12pt*]Wayne T
576/748[*/size*]

Just copy and past the above into your signature area and fil in how you would like your name to appear. Remove the * from the above code. I had to put the in to disable the code funtion.

If you have a web site and would like it to appear in your signature the code would look like this:

[*size=12pt*]Your Name and Whatever Else You Like[*/size*]
[*url=http://yourwebsiteurl.com/*]The Name of Your Web Site[/url*]

Again, remove the * in the above code.

If you are familiar with using BB Code all of them can be found at this link:
http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=57.0

The rest of the profile information is pretty straight forward. I will try to find some motorcycle related avatars if you want to use them. You can upload your own. Default size is 65 x 65 pixels.

If anyone needs help customizing their signature just send me a private message and I'll be glad to assist.

probed the inside of my gas tank with a webcam to see what condition it was in after 41 years. I couldn't believe what I saw! I have had custom tanks with worse rust after sitting on a shelf for a couple of months. For all you safety minded folks out there, yes I did use an inert gas prior to putting that camera in there!  :)

General Discussion / Found A 1969 - What to Look For?
« on: March 02, 2010, 07:36:02 pm »
My old friend is offering me his 69. I used to ride this bike in the later 70's. It has not been ridden since but I'm told the engine has been run as recently as summer 2009. I'm not sure what to offer him if it is a sancast model. As far as I know the only thing not original on the bike is the handlebars. It wil need a major resoration due to corrosion etc.

What should I look for on this bike to come to some kind of buying price?

I know to look for engine number between CB750 1000001 to CB750 1007414. I'l look for a "wrinkle" tank, cast gas cap? I'm told the exhaust is good and a candidate for re-chroming. Is there anything I should look for on the exhaust? Numbers etc?

Any help on putting a value on this piece (assuming it's a sandcast) would be appreciated. Other rare parts/features I should look for? I think I can pick it up for $2500.00 - $3000.00 Canadian. Thanks!

Oh, the bike has about 30,000 miles on it. Only a few more than when I used to ride it in the late 70's!
