General Discussion / Opinions on die cast engine stamp please!!
« on: June 22, 2013, 07:33:35 pm »
Hi all,

Today I put my donor K0 engine for sale on ebay. Within hours someone emailed me saying the numbers do not look right. I compared it to my sand cast engine number, as it is the easiest reference I have at hand... and it does indeed look to be a different font. The zero's do not look right. The "B" sure looks the same on both my sand cast engine and the die cast engine.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-CB750-K0-DIE-CAST-ENGINE-9360-RUNS-GOOD-NEAR-SAND-CAST-NUMBERS-69-70-/181163099111?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a2e2983e7#ht_2455wt_1286

Above all, I am an honest seller on ebay, if someone could voice their opinion I would very much appreciate it. Perhaps a warranty engine case replacement? The stamp by a local dealer on a set of factory unstamped cases?

If so, does it greatly affect the value, in your honest opinion? I realize I may have to reduce the price... but is it a huge deal to have a restamped case? it would be very good to have some expert opinions, and I will certainly revise my listing accordingly.

Thanks in advance!!

Regards, John

Wheels - Hubs - Spokes - Tires / I DON'T THINK THIS IS CORRECT RIM?
« on: June 08, 2013, 06:04:03 pm »
this is the rear rim on my k0 donor bike. looking at pictures of the "rolled rim" correct for the sand cast, I believe this is a non-rolled rim and incorrect. opinions are greatly appreciated!! thanks!

Fenders (mudguards) and Seats / OPINIONS ON REPOP TIN SET??
« on: June 08, 2013, 03:39:00 pm »
starting to get my ducks in a row! I am a long ways from paint, but been researching some stuff... I am looking at maybe $1600 usd worth of paint and body work on my k0 donor tin set. for about the same price I can get a painted tin set? anyone use these?

http://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1830

how's the quality? I was THINKING of shelving the original tins and MAYBE going this route. I value the opinions expressed on this board very much, am very interested in what you people think about the idea.

I would like to either have my tins restored early on, or go with some repops, so when I start the put together the roller I can put the headlight ears on. trying to figure out budget and such. if I went the repop route I would save all the k0 donor tins for "someday".

fyi, my donor tank has small dents, bad paint, minor rust inside. upper two hole air box is badly cracked and shabbily repaired. side covers are nice. headlight bucket has much cable rub. ears are fair at best.

would like to have a game plan, and input is very much appreciated!

General Discussion / Donor bike #9394 for #1767 project bike
« on: May 11, 2013, 03:45:18 pm »
Hi everyone,

Sorry it's been a while... last year was the year of breakdowns, had to replace the furnace and all appliances and all sorts of stuff at the house... well I am trying to get the 1767 project moving ahead. As some of you may remember, I bought K0 9394/9360 last winter for a donor bike. Honestly... I know about as much about correct sand cast donor parts as I do about women...  ???

I hate buying bikes over the net, without looking at them in person, which is just what I did with #9394. I am fairly disappointed with the overall finish and quality. The seat is a wreck, the chrome is pitted, the tank is so-so, the spokes are rusted, and so on. I was hoping for a much cleaner example considering what I laid out for her. The pictures on ebay sure didn't appear to be as rough as the bike is in person.

At this point, I am just hoping that the p/o didn't swap out a lot of the correct parts for later stuff. The guy I got this from apparently deals in a lot of CB750's which may be a bad thing, for apparent reasons. Anyways, I am hopefully at the point where the sand cast and the die cast will start to come together as one. I would very much welcome your comments, observations, and suggestions regarding the use of these donor parts.

And just to refresh my project basis, #1767 was badly butchered by its p/o with a bad chopper job, the frame was totally hacked up for fat bob tanks and a king/queen chopper seat... swing pin welded to make it a rigid... exhaust pipes sawzalled off... I basically have a good running low mile (8-9k miles) motor, gauges, controls, front wheel, carbs, and a few other bits from 1767. I bought a k0 frame and swing arm (actually haven't checked them out well yet) and will have the "good" front half of frame 1767 professionally mated to the rear section of the untitled k0 donor frame I bought.

Any thoughts, good or bad, are much appreciated regarding the use of #9394 as a donor bike!!

Cheers, John

General Discussion / questions on un-doing frame mods
« on: August 29, 2012, 05:07:12 pm »
hi, i recently found #1767/e1774 in the remote sandhills of nebraska, far from home. there is a heart breaking story with the bike... the guy i got it from got it from a buddy who was building a chopper out of it!!  :'( i have a few of the original parts not shown in the photo's but not much. as this guy was hauling it from his buddy's house, the guy said "hey take the seat and tank too" but he didn't want it... so as the guy drove away the p/o TOSSED the tank into the back of his truck... yeah it was a wrinkle tank and ducktail seat, oh and the tail light with two hole bracket... well before i saw the cl ad someone else saw it and asked about the tank and seat and tail light, the guy figured it was junk and sold it for (what he thought was outrageous) $200. when i asked about all the other stuff he said the p/o has dozed the building down and all the scrap and even the bulding was long gone to the dump.  >:( when the p/o had it, before the chop, it was VERY original and in great shape  :'( :'( :'( she's not much to look at these days! it does have 8900 original miles on it and ran fine before getting the torch.

SO... i am new to the world of k0's and welcome any and all comments and/or help on getting this thing back into driveable shape. i doubt if it will ever be a true restoration, there is just too much missing... my goal is to get the motor and frame back to the best possible shape and take it from there. i have 2 k2's and a k3 to use as donor parts (not so much as a restoration but more a driveable mock up).

first order of business: cleaning up the motor. after much thought i have decided to not rebuild the motor as it has 8900 original miles and runs. was thinking of pressure washing it and see how it comes out. will have to be careful to plug up any openings of course.

second order of business: frame repairs. i think a professional frame repair shop can graft part of an old frame back onto this one. it has been cut and welded as you can see in the pics (if i get them to post!). i welcome any advice here!! i think the k2/k3 frames i have won't do. research tells me that the earlier the frame, the cruder the welds. so do you guys think any old k0 frame can be used as a donor frame?? i have the k3 with no title but want to be as correct as possible, even with a butchered frame. i DO have a clean title for the sandy and the neck and front area is pretty much untouched, the numbers are crisp too with no cable rub. swing arm?? k2/k3 part numbers are slightly different. again, do i need a k0 swing arm, or maybe try and grind the welds from the original one?? of course i want to keep it as original as possible, but some shortcuts would be welcome in this project.. i simply do not have an unlimited budget.

as i get the frame repairs done and the frame painted or coated (cons of powder coating?? i know it's not period correct of course) i will be using k2/k3 donor parts to make it a rolling chassis, get it fired up, get it titled in my name, and at least have accomplished a big chunk of the preliminary work. all repairs/restoration work/donor parts will be carefully documented. i suppose having a butchered frame to start with will make this one less than an ideal candidate for a councours type of resto. i am shooting for a decent driveable somewhat correct unit at completion. any thoughts on the project are appreciated.

cheers, john in omaha nebraska
