I have ordered a few items from Japan. I have not been charged any extra Duties or taxes. I am no expert, but that is my experiance so far.

Good luck, always fun to get a new box pf parts to play with!

I had some parts shipped from Yamiya to a friend in the US a couple of months back, collected them in Ohio and brought them back to the UK in my hand luggage. Just walked through the "nothing to declare channel", and no duty / tax involved.
I guess if UK customs happen to stop you, you just have to try and bluff a low value to minimise the duty, etc.

Good luck - Chris R.
