Does any one have experience or know of un-matched upper/lower cases being used to complete an engine ?

Attempting to fit random crank and trans.shafts to upper and lower cases that were not line bored as a pair, I have to believe would create clearance/tolerance problems.  I'd think cases and shafts were "matched" at the factory.

I don't think the cranks were matched but the cases certainly would have been.  I think trying to match a lower case would be very difficult.
