Title: engine test stand
Post by: Steve Swan on December 01, 2015, 11:52:08 am
thought some might like to see the engine test stand i use to to run in engines before installing in frame.  not having a welder, i had a friend make the stand up for me.  F1 engine pictured in stand.  ran it through 3 heat cycles for total of about 75 minutes.  of course, use a fan when running the engine stationary.  really a good feeling to know the engine has no issues before burying the engine in the frame surrounded by thousands of dollars of perfect nos or restored parts.  testing the engine before beginning the restoration removes unwanted suspense.  the other good thing with this test stand, is i can dynamically time ignition, synch the carbs, and dial each carb's a/f ratio with the exhaust gas analyzer.  E1973 now in stand.

I like it.  I've often thought about doing that.

Steve,

Where are the mount points on your stand?

I'm considering an engine stand and I noticed that many people use to the two rear mount points. Here's a pic (not a sandcast, but you get the idea):

I'm a bit nervous trying this with a sandcast engine. Is that too much to ask of the rear mount points?

Ujenji:

i have 2 "stands."

#1. work stand.  made out of square stock. supports engine front and rear.

#2. test stand. supports engine front and rear.  fabricated form old auto engine hoist.  picture of E1973 on it.  if i could load a pic of the engine running on the stand i would, but too many MEGABYTES !

(i could not feel comfortable mounting the engine on rear only.  alot of stress.)
