All sandcast engines came equipped with thin cradle shoulders on the rocker shaft holders. Later die cast engines (from E1010338 Thanks Chris Rushton) had thick shoulders, due to cracking issues, and also had a modified cam cover to accommodate this larger shoulder casting. There is a detailed thread describing the differences between these cam covers.
Honda made several different castings of these cradles over the life of the sandcast engine. The early engines (at least to E132) had castings which were very different from the latter castings so I've provided some detailed photos that members may find interesting if anything. One striking feature of the early casting is it was painted, and cast using a single sand box. Later castings had a very pronounced casting box ridge where the 2 boxes were joined prior to casting.
