Highest 'last' sandcast Engine Number ?

It's fairly commonly accepted, CB750 1007414, was the last engine number to carry a set of sandcast crankcases.

WHAT WAS THE LAST SANDCAST FRAME NUMBER ?

Would assume the last frame could possibly have a number higher than 7414.

Our latest example is 7319/7375. Only 95 numbers away.......

Will be nice to see if E7414 reveals it's self.

My copy of the parts list (Issue 4, september 10 1977)does indeed refer on page 57 to 1007414 as being the highest sandcast serial number. But surely that reference is to the engine number rather than frame number. I would of thought the question is really as to what is the highest frame number to have been factory fitted with a sandcast motor ( and that is not necessarily the one fitted with engine 1007414 given the irregular way that engine serial numbers appear to have been allocated)

I would say the CB750 w/ sandcast engine #E1007414 would be the most valuable sandcast ever, by far. would love to find it. #E1000001 probably pretty desirable, too.  ::)

I notice that a good many engine #'s are about 50 or 60 less than the frame VIN. The last sandcast frame might be as low as 7330 or something like that. In fact if to take into account the one known above 7319 with engine 7375 being only 39 away from the last one. The last one would have to be at or very damn neer Frame # 7358.

That would make frame # 7319 within the last 39 or so sandcasts.

Hmmm........ Is that 7414 number referencing the engine number or the frame number ? Looks like 7414 probably is the engine number, NOT the frame. On a little closer study on my behalf, i note there are no chassis parts given reference to 7414.

I just assumed Honda would reference changes by frame number, not engine number, since vehicles are registered by frame number, not engine number. Have never really givne the 7414 number much thought or study.

Another interesting note - page 127 of my February 1971 parts manual, notes different p.n.'s for frame CB750 1000001 to CB750 1003950. Is CB750 1003951, when the horn mount was switched to the RH side ?

ez way to check is to look up horn part #, l and r have different part #. LS horn sandcasts look so much cooler  8) and stand out from common K0's. Also its what to look for when trying to spot a sandcast from just a pic   ;)

well I must speak for those of us that don't have the early left side horn. More than half of sandcast bikes have the horn on the right. An early sandcast would be choice, but the right side horn is not a quick way to rule out a bike as a die cast from a picture. The horn on the left is the only of use in a picture to spot an early sandcast.

the number used was ENGINE NUMBER # 1007414 as last sandcast set of cases.

After thinking about this for a while, wouldn't it make sense that if there were 7414 sandcast motors then there would be 7414 "sandcast" frames.  I've seen examples of motor numbers being higher or lower than the frame.  Frame 7414 would have an engine number less than or equal to (not likely) 7414.  This of course assumes that all 7414 motors were put in frames.  Just a thought.

This bike had a KPH speedo and i bought it from the original owner who said it was imported to Oz from France.. TC
I sold my first Sandcast and regretted it till I bought it back 6958/7149, its taken a few years to get a couple more 6946/7169, and 6970/E6956

Trivia question:  There were more than 7414 sandcast motors made.  Do you know what the two examples are?

The obvious ones are the spare cases used as parts replacement that were never numbered. Just a guess but I would say the other is the french Sandcast engine featured on this site and  maybe race engines KP :-\

I think the actual number will never be known!
Even assuming that all 7414 numbered case sets were built into complete motors and factory fitted into bikes, there was the French "oddity", number 1014xxx, plus at least two other similarly higher numbered ones which are reputed to exist. Then there were the four Las Vegas late pre-production bikes, the Tokyo show bike (+ another of the same (?) which was ridden in the US early in '69). Also various pictures have surfaced of a white test bike, the drum brake prototype. I'm not even going to suggest that we try to count the very early test "mules", nor count replacement sandcast cases as these were not factory built motors. For me the answer can only be "more than 7414".
