What else do I need to do to finish my Sandcast?

Hi All,

I have been a member for a while now but this is my first post.  I restored my sandcast a few years ago and have almost 1000 miles on it since.  I now want to make my restoration a little more correct than it currently is.  The things that I know that I need to replace are as follows:

Real sandcast seat vs the Plastic pan repop that I have now.  Should I be getting a 10 hole Yamiya one or the 17 hole $1000 one sold on ebay?
Correct tank trim vs the later version that I have now
Correct Mirrors vs the cheap ones I have now
Re powder coat the center stand black-the guy put it in the wrong pile and it got the silver color like other parts
Get a new wiring harness as mine has 20+ repairs to it-I dread the tear down to make this happen.
Put progressive fork springs in as I now have a pogo stick front end.

I spent over $1200 on NOS HM 300 exhaust-was this a mistake vs the Yamiya Lotus root ones?

I ordered the Yamiya sticker kit and noticed many inconsistencies from my original rear fender sticker-unfortunately he would not grant me a refund.


Things that I have purposely changed to make it a rider/meet my personal taste are Dyna electronic ignition, Dyna coils and wires, Stainless steel hex bolts on the engine case covers and new tires.

The bike runs flawlessly/fires immediately and is very smooth since I synchronized the carbs.

The engine was rebuilt with all NOS parts with the 2nd oversize pistons and rings due to grooving in #2 cylinder.  Only thing not NOS were the APE studs.

What else am I missing?  All comments and suggestions are welcome!!

It`s at beautiful sandcast.
Some hints/remarks and what you are missing in my mind:

- Change the spark plug cabs and cables to black (original - not NGK)
- Paint the instruments black
- Change to the correct grips on the handlebar
- Polish the front forks
- Route the cable on the right side of the engine under the kick starter
- Your Sandcast is "late type", and 17 holes in the seat pan is correct as far as I know, but the 10 hole YAMIYA seat is top. I have one and I can recommend it.
- As far as I know is the only stickers you have to put on is the rear fork and the oil tank cover. There where no one on the rear fender.
- HM300 exhaust is OK.
- Change the tachometer cable to black
- The mirrors seams correct.
- In my mind there is no reason for using powder coating on a sandcast
- Thees stainless Allen bolts are your personal choice. I have a K1 with these. Grrr...:-)
- The tubes on the carbs seems to be green. I purpose black
- I think the correct side cover emblems should be yellow.
- Yes, put on the correct tank trim without the black strip
- It is missing the chain guard
- Maby polish the Hube's.

Welcome, Ed, to the club and keep posting !

You need the 17 hole later type seat pan.  I'd suggest finding a good K0 seat pan and buy the red Yamiya foam and seat cover, an exact faithful copy.

Sorry to hear the decals were not the same as original.  Parts i've got from them are right on.

Thanks for the comments guys.  Nielsen- I actually have the Yamiya instrument black plastic instrument covers.  I covered them with the chrome gauge covers from Carpy in CA to protect them.  I do agree though that the original black showing looks better. The way the front forks are set up now was to bead blast them followed up with 2 coats of clear coat.  When I tear them down for the new fork springs I could polish the lowers.  I learned how to do that at a much later date than when I re did the forks at the beginning of the build.  What cable do I need to route on the right side of the engine under the kick starter?  Thanks for the information on the stickers.  Are there really only 2 stickers that were on the Sandcasts?  Does anyone have pictures for reference?   I used the clear tubing on the carbs at the beginning because I had some leaking float valve issues and it helped me to see which carb was leaking.  Now that that issue has been fixed I will source some black fuel tubing for replacement.  Good catch on the chain guard  it now has the correct one in place!!  Here is a link to the seat that I was looking at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370380179830&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT   -does anyone have experience with these guys??  It looks nice, shows the 17 hole seat pan and is priced about the same as Yamiya's 10 hole seat.

In accordance to parts list no. 1 there are no stickers on the rear fender. I don`t believe either that VIC has made a mistake here: http://cb750sandcastonly.com/gallery/Honda-Museum-VIN-189/Honda_Museum_2_VIN_18X

I also thought about Steves advise with the seat. I came to the conclusion that if I had to by foam and skin from JP, seat pan from other source and send to a specialist to be made the total costs would be very near to a complete seat from JP. In case I also had find strap, list, screws and other parts.

It looks correct with 17 holes when some holes are covered with the rubber brackets.
