Title: Sandcast 3716 / E4962 on eBay
Post by: Kevin M on March 13, 2021, 02:12:41 am
Sandcast 3716 / E4692 is listed on eBay. The bike has 16K miles on it and it looks quite nice with lots of Yamiya parts, although I'm not a fan of powder coated frames. It also has a big bore kit and racing camshaft. At first, I thought the numbers were too far off to match, and the seller seems to think so as well.  But if you look at the VIN directory, the next couple of VIN numbers (3717 and 3719) are also way off: 3717/E2747 and 3719/E5390 and 3739/E4669.  Perhaps they had some odd ball engines lying around that day and decided to put them in.

I’ve never seen a frame VIN that looked quite like this one. Thoughts anyone? At least he’s honest in his description as to what he’s actually selling.  ;) ;)

I believe that the VIN was covered with a strip of masking tape before the frame was powder coated, leaving an edge around the numbers when the masking tape was removed. It's my understanding that the VIN has to be masked off or the thickness of the powder coat will fill in the VIN making it very difficult or impossible to read. Having said that, I'm no expert having never had a frame powder coated, but I've seen this before on other bikes.
