My sandcast #1 has original no# pipes on it, I ride it once a year or so.  The pipes are decent but #2 was rusted thru and repaired.

Sandcast#2 has a kerker header and I am currently riding it every week,  The header was new when I put it on.  I LOVE the sound and the way it runs.  I will probably put some Yamiya's on here eventually. personally, I would still ride it with the new pipes.  I would just try to keep the bike really clean and keep the pipes dry inside when parked.  Always warm it up fully until the pipes are hot before parking it.  Spray some wd-40 in the pipes when you park it for a while.

Towards the end of this video you can hear the Kerker.

So now that I have had a chance to look at this more, I see the support strut is from a later year and even the early 70's struts still have the little support wire welded to the strut.  Anybody know which years I will need, I am guessing just the K0 will work??  Now I just need a real beater K0 fender for cheap so I can salvage the support strut.  Either flea bay or Bob's in Phoenix unless someone out there has one they want to sell?

Then I just need 4 solid rivets, I don't want to use pop rivets like what is in there.  Worst case, I can make those on my lathe.  Anybody know a good source for these rivets?

Well, I finally own a real double cut fender....I know, real exciting huh??  BUT part of this hobby is the treasure hunt.  I bought this on ebay and I was a little skeptical because the fender strut had been modified.  But I just opened the box and so far I am happy because the fender itself is a real double cut as far as I can tell (the inside folds do not come all the way to the end, and the front is longer than a fakie), and the strut can be returned to stock and the fender looks totally fixable/restorable to me.  I believe my chrome/resto shop can make this fender look as new without too much trouble.

One piece at a time...my sandies get more and more correct....

here is the ebay link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120670074502&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2248wt_937

Any comments or feedback welcome, I want this fender to be correct when I am done....I know the little welded on loop for the front brake line does not belong.

Just got back from the Las Vegas Auction.  I have been to it the last 3 years.  Bought my CBX there 2 years ago.   There are more British bikes than anything, but the Japanese bikes seem to do very well there and that segment of the market is getting stronger right now.  Last year there was a K0 750 that was really junked up and fetched $5750.  People tend to over pay, it's a better place to sell than buy IMHO, but sometimes a deal can be had, I only paid $3500 for my CBX, but it wasn't running at the time and probably was a fair price for it.

Mark,

For the brushed aluminum finish I know we send the parts to the chrome shop for polishing.  These are machined 6061 T6 Aluminum parts.  I know he belt sands the parts first to remove any machining marks, and then polishes with coarser wheels and grit than for mirror polishing.  For the brushed finish, there is a brush stroke direction to the finish.  I am going to talk to my chrome shop and get some more specifics from him such as what wheel and what grit, etc.  Then the parts are sent to the powder coaters for the clear.  We do not have trouble with yellowing, but you must of course use a UV protected clear powder.

Thanks for the info on the Eastwood Diamond clear.  I have tried the rattle cans but I have not tried the extreme diamond clear.

I also have a 1980 cbx if you need that as well?

I also have a 1972 Kawasaki H2 in pristine condition, which is another defining bike of that era, if you are interested.

I am in AZ but if you give me the dates a little in advance, I can be in TX hill country with one or 2 pristine 1969 CB 750's.  There are some pics at http://www.madmattsgarage.com

I have a red one I just finished in addition to the blue one shown.

General Discussion / A big thanks to the contributors of this site!
« on: December 18, 2010, 12:23:17 pm »
I just wanted to say thanks to the guys who have posted so much great technical info on this site.  I know it takes a lot of time to take good pics and upload them and all.  I now have my 2 sandcasts restored and both in ridable condition, both built from parts and so they are far from all correct as I used many CB750 parts that were simple available to me so I could finish.  This took me about 5 years.  My next goal is to make them as correct as possible, one part at a time.  I am pretty sure that will take me another 5 years at least!  But, it would be a very difficult task without the resources of this website.  I have just recently been reading everything on this site and learning about all the nuances of correct parts and I am sincerely grateful to all the contributions made by the experts here.  I will try to be a contributor as I go so as to give back as I have certainly gained much from the info here.

Merry X-mas all!

KP,

I have been polishing my aluminum, and leaving it raw.  That way it can be touched up more easily every so often.  I figure once you clear coat it, then to fix it, it would have to be stripped and re-polished.  I do have a Caswell polishing wheel, but its such a dirty job, I have been sending mine to the chrome shop for polishing.

Eastwood makes a rattle can clear that I have experimented with. http://www.eastwood.com/diamond-clear-gloss-set.html  I have not used this on any restorations because I am just worried about the durability.

Once again, I leave it raw and touch it up.  I use metal gloss polish for the touch up, you can also use their sealer as a protective coating. http://www.metalgloss.com/.  This metal gloss stuff is FANTASTIC, it really works well to clean up old chrome and take the bluing off of exhaust pipes as well.

Also, some of my production parts for Kewlmetal are finished to match the OEM brushed aluminum.  They are powder coated clear.  I think this is a nice option for the durability.  I will find out from my powder coat shop how they are doing the brushed look.  But for powder coat, I have the Eastwood gun in my garage. They are selling the gun for $69 ! http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powder-coating/powder-coat-guns/original-hotcoat-powdercoating-gun.html

I have a toaster oven for small parts, and I recently added a full size oven in my shop.  I love having the powder coating capability at home and I use it a lot.

KP,

Thats because we have both been bitten by the same bug along with lots of others on this site.  I am just wondering how that little bug managed to fly all the way across such a big pond!!

I have just finished the red paint for my sandcast #2 and I am itching to take it outside in the sunlight but it is raining here so I will just post a couple garage pics for now.  I am itching to take my #1 and #2 out and get some pics together.  #1 is now blue and #2 red.  They were both basket cases and I went through pretty much the same as mark1b did, breaking off engine studs and repairing threads, etc.  I was reading his build threads on sohc4 which were quite inspiring.  I can't wait to have some pics of my 2 together like his!  So mark has obviously been bitten by the same bug.  I have another H2 all in pieces, another freakin basket case, which I keep telling myself I will only buy whole bikes from now on...but then someone offers me a bike in boxes, with a pile of NOS parts, for a fraction of its real cost, so there I am with another bike in a box.  Not to mention I have tons of correct sandy parts to collect as I try to make both sandys correct, one piece at a time.  I have a Yamiya seat on order, so there is one more upgrade to my sandys!  I really need some correct front fenders.

KP,

I own an aftermarket motorcycle parts company, we are a manufacturer and distributor of our own line of products, the main website is http://www.kewlmetalstore.com/

Kewlmetal has a photo gallery and I have added a vintage section: http://kewlmetalgallery.com/index.php?cPath=652

We also have a bunch of blogs, and we have a vintage blog:http://www.vintagebikeaccessories.com/

Thats all the vintage stuff within my company.  Recently I started a personal website kind of just to test some of the low cost software available at godaddy, there isn't much there yet but I will be adding soon: http://www.madmattsgarage.com/

Like I said my Nick Name on most all the forums is Mad Matt, although I could not get that one on the CBX forum. I do a lot of posting for my business,  Mostly on the Can-Am Spyder site, my partner handles the Victory stuff.

I have a youtube channel for my vintage hobby: http://www.youtube.com/user/madmattsgarage

And there is a you tube channel for Kewlmetal that also has some vintage stuff on it:http://www.youtube.com/user/kewlmetal

I am betting you are sorry you asked st this point  :), but I am glad you did!

I have been itching to add some vintage parts to the Kewlmetal lineup, but just been too busy with what we have going in the Spyder, Victory, and Harley markets.  Just having a blast working on my 2 sandcasts and I have the red paint very close to done so I will post some pics soon.

Fellow Forum Members,

mrdeza is now mad matt.

My handle on most other forums is mad matt so I wanted to change it up here just for consistency, not sure why I signed up as mrdeza in the first place.  I also have a website and you tube channel called mad matts garage so once again, I wanted to change it up for consistency.  Just wanted to let everyone know just to avoid confusion.
