Steve,

I think I remember that there was a service bulletin that covered that change, but you would need someone with a complete set to look it up? I could be mistaken as it has been a few years?

Mark McGrew here, let me... let all know at same time. I am not sure that machining these covers can be done to the exact standard that you members want. This is a very tricky job, but it might look or seem a simple task. My son when he looked at it, said, why don"t you just hand grind these things as there will be some hand work involved at end of machining anyway? He might be right. Also, no one yet has told me what they will pay for these covers and as this is a limited market what will I be able to sell?

It works like this, I will have hours and hours of set up time and then run time to test (wreck) a few beat up covers I have here, but to get a nice finished cover, customers need to send me nice covers to start with... as you don't want to have a thin lip profile on a cover that has deep scratches in it or cannot be polished back to OEM finish...correct?

And now if I do one cover the cost would be 1000 dollars, 4-5 prob 350-400, 10-15 200-250.00..so you can see that there is an "economy of scale" at work here.

anyone with interest, better form a line... so I can see if this is even worth it.

VIN's / Re: "CB750" v.s. "K0"

In speaking with Bob Hansen and Bob Jameson about this question...they, nor myself ever heard anyone at AHM (American Honda Motor Company) refer to the CB750 as a.. KO. I believe this came later from the parts department and is used with all designations of the first model runs, on all Honda including Trail 70's, Z50'S, etc. I was mechanic when bike first came out at local Honda dealership and attended one of the first Schools at Honda training center in Racine, WI. Bob Hansen was the man who told Mr Honda not to build a CB750 TWIN. Bob Jameson was instructor at Honda school in Racine and was in Japan when the FIRST production CB750 was built.

Reading from original Service Bulletin 750#29 dated 4/1/71

the number used was ENGINE NUMBER # 1007414 as last sandcast set of cases.

Hi there.  I was a little surprised to see this thread resurrected.  I had two sandcasts, and I ended up parting out most of the one in the above pictures on eBay.  For the past many years it has been a dream of mine to build a 1969 sandcast CR750 'Dick Mann' Daytona 500  race winner replica, and I have been collecting bits for a long time to make it happen.  I need to finish up one more ('76 CB750) project to sell before I have the funds to focus on this CR again.  Thankfully I still have most of the '69 and CR bits I have been collecting.

I withdrew from posting here about all that because it was not received very well....   In fact I was a little put off by some of the hostility it drummed up.  I realize that this club really focuses on stock restorations, so it probably is not the best place to expect an enthusiastic response about anything else.  Nevertheless, I will continue to slowly work on my humble sandcast restoration/ reproduction.  In fact I was looking at the petrol tank this just week, fitting up a nice Pingle petcock and making plans for paint work.

Having said all that, I have the deepest respect for those of you who are working hard (and spending a mint) restoring and preserving these classic stock machines.  Kudos to you.  Also, CONGRATULATIONS on updating the forum.  It looks really good.

Peace and grease,
Steve

Steve,

There is a lot of interest in CR750 replicas and even some pics and data on the few real CR Kit bikes that have been created. Try the sohc/4 forum web site. It would be hard for the Sandcast Only group to include bikes that are not just that...Sandcast. I suppose if the cases were sandcast and you built a replica, there could be a posting for...CB750KO sandcast specials?
