Tips on Board Functions / Re: Oil filter housing
« on: December 27, 2022, 03:34:51 pm »
Hello,i am fairly new to the group. I am searching for the most accurate sand cast oil filter housing available. Who makes it and where do i get it ?
So looking for mirrors. Are the Yamiya copy of both item accurate ?
Any help appreciated

Welcome to the group.  i haven't participated much the past few years and my knowledge of most accurate repro parts available isn't up to date, but to my knowledge and experience no one then was making an accurate reproduction of the housing.  i know Yamiya was offering these filter covers but the last i saw of them they were a rough cast finish which was not the factory finish that was not highly polished.  Attached you can note the filter cover that came with my F232 bike.  Finding an original cover will probably take a lot of searching.  You could always look for the early finned version without web reinforcements on the inside, or any finned cover and knock off the fins and finish the final turning in a lathe which i've done a number of times or do the same to a Yamiya cover assuming they still have a rough cast finish.

Please do follow up on the forum for the benefit of others with what you finally settled with.

New Member Introductions / Re: 9/69 twins
« on: December 07, 2022, 08:56:14 pm »
Hey folks,
I'm new to750 Honda . I've got two 69s. The funny thing is they were both built in 9 of 69, but they are 6 thousand apart.
one is 6740 and the other is over 12k. how can they make that many in a month?

Leonard, there is not a simple answer to your question.

Although nearly anything is possible with range differences between Evins and Fvins, to better understand your vin's it would be helpful if you shared the Evin/Fvin for each machine so the vin spread between engine and frame can be pondered.

By Sept.1969, frame tags read mfgr date and frame number.  The majority of sandcast Evins will show the engine number on the vin pad and a casting date elsewhere on the case.  i can't speak with certainty to casting dates on pressure cast cases, but i'm somewhat certain pressure cast cases also have casting dates.

Assuming your one Sept.69 machine has non-sandcast cases, what would be interesting to know on those non-sandcast cases is what the casting dates are...  Without knowing the casting dates on the non-sandcast cases, it is not possible to know if the casting date is close to the time frame 12,xxx numbers were stamped on the cases at the factory.   If i recall correctly, by September's end, vin numbers  were not much higher than 9,xxx.  10,xxx numbers were seen around October and 11,xxx numbers during November 1969.

If my memory serves me correctly, engines stamped 12,xxx would have received that stamp late in the year 1969, likely December, perhaps, but possibly or unlikely, November 1969.  Assuming the 12,xxx number you refer to is the engine number, it might prove fascinating to know the casting date which one can, based on vin study experience, deduce could have a December or November casting date.

If the casting date on your 12,xxx engine is later than September, then a debate could take place why a post-September assembled engine is in a September frame.  Casual guess would be that a post-September set of cases replaced cast in September cases, i.e., the engine that came in your September frame got swapped out for a December engine; likely reason due to chain wadding.  If your 12,xxx cases have September or October casting dates (unlikely), an even more interesting debate of conjecture could occur.

What would be best is if you would post pictures of the Evins and Fvins so that the font can evaluated for factory authentic and weren't dealer stamped on a set of blank cases replacing broken cases.

In direct reply to your question, "How can they make that many in a month?" the answer, justifiably so, could be, "Not 6000."

The longer answer would be that during the period of time when pressure cast cases began being used and sandcast cases were not longer used, production in October slowed considerably throughout and into November and as i mentioned earlier by December, 1969, vins were up to the 12,xxx range and by January, 1970 vins were in  the 20,xxx range.  That being said, from the last 7414 sandcast vin coming off the assembly line sometime September 1969 and 7415 being a pressure cast vin, 7415 plus 5000 more engines built would take us approximately your 12,xxx vin.  That being said, one could guess that 5000 engines were assembled sometime between mid-September and December 1969...  Mid-September 1969 to December's end 1969 is roughly 3-1/2 months, so 5000/3.5 = 1428 engines per month were produced, although this is unlikely as fewer units were produced in October than November and fewer units produced in November than December, so forth and so on.

In closing, a careful and thoughtful study of the vin registry accompanied with critical thinking will readily provide the student with somewhat of an approximate idea of production numbers on a monthly basis, in some cases during earlier sandcast production periods even on a bi-monthly basis.

www.cb750sandcastonly.com is perfect the way it is.  There's no bullshit artists here nor people who need to get a life.  The site was intended for the sandcast CB750's only and that's the way it should remain.  It is expected that with only 7,414 vin numbers *AND* the French sandcasts does make for a very small population where only so much new information will be discovered and further analysis can occur, and as such, these activities decrease with each passing year.  Anyone who thinks www.cb750sandcastonly.com is not inclusive has made an accurate observation.  Those disgruntled need have the gumption to start their own site that caters to their personal interest and  quit being crybabies.  This site is devoted to learning as much as we can about sandcast machines and preservation thereof.  It is an invaluable resource and most who come here because they don't know and benefit from it as such.  i suggest quit whining about lack of participation and be grateful we have something no one else provides and we enjoy it at almost no cost.  I really don't care to have a consortium of jackasses posting stuff here like I've read the 3 times i was on sandcast facebook site.  If the facebook site Wayne graciously  formed attracts one active member, that's great.  If not, that's ok too. The forum has existed 17 years, when one googles "sandcast" the forum shows 5th in line.  When one googles "sandcast honda" the forum is at the top.  So it's not that the forum and website are obscure.  it's because some people use the site for their own selfish interests and other people use the site to benefit others and themselves.  Live and let live.

Thanks KP. I sincerely hope those that use FB join the group. I’ve already added a couple of post on things we get a lot of inquiry’s on. More to come I’m sure as people join.

Wayne, this might be a good way to lure prospects into the site and forum.  Maybe everything in the site should be downloaded and saved, sh#tcan StartLogic and start anew...  is Sam involved?

Seems to be the norm in recent years. You ask for opinions, input, comments or whatever and get little in return. Last count 97 views and 3 responses to your post Wayne. Yes this is the only good source for information on the Sandcast model, and I will repeat, only good source. I read on another site a day or two ago where a sandcast owner posted a GENUINE sandcast for sale; then for some ignorant troll to claim it was a fake frame number  ::). Very few came to the sellers defence, even some of the claimed experts of the group were post absent. Congratulations to the few who did.
A facebook forum as a part of this site is long overdue, even though I'm not a fan of facebook

Apparently we live in an era where there are more takers than givers seeking more immediate gratification.   I use facebook for my other motorcycle interests; it does get the word out there quick to a bunch of people all at the same time and is helpful with finding a part, helping and meeting people who don't use forums.  Facebook also has its limitations and isn't that great as a repository for information.   However, KP and i have had many lively convo's using email the past 20 years, those convo's just don't go to a community.  At least this site has always managed to discourage keyboard commando's who crave attention, want something they don't have, to sell something or ask what's it worth.  That type of ilk is readily seen on the facebook you refer to Wayne, so it's more entertainment than anything else.  This website helps most those who have passion for the sandcast; others don't need the information.  i see no point in catering  to or pandering the information on this site to the masses.  I know there's always been a push to be more inclusive, i even gave in to including K0 bikes. This site was started specifically to learn about things sandcast only.  In those times there were those who liked to keep what they knew secret and nearly all but one (Vic World) didn't know that much.  I don't know why this site needs the attention or should go looking for it.  7414+ sandcasts is a tiny niche in the motorcycle world, so it's understandable there's not much action happening here and why really care who doesn't post here...?  There's a number of individuals who have participated here, some have called themselves "members" and have gone over to the facebook thing for whatever their reasoning.   They know who they are, so fu#k 'em.  I suppose a sandcastonly facebook could perhaps lure people to the sandcast site, but to what avail?  For people who like to yakkity-yak >>> go facebook.  For people who still have the passion, keep it here.  i still have passion for the sandcast, i've put my energies elsewhere and still am no good at website stuff or at least this platform and busy restoring bikes we don't talk about here.  Is Sam still actively involved?

Al, thanks for your pm to me about this eng.#456.

You've covered a number of details on what sounds to be two different bikes, so it's unclear to know how to answer what you want to know.

If you would be so kind as to ask specific questions, that would help us help you.

Also if you have any pictures of the irregularities in the stamping of the 456 vin that would give us something to study.

Kind regards,
Steve

It just had to happen. The recessed switch is now being reproduced and they are very very good copies. Photos attached
I have a friend in Japan who gave me one of these early prototype recessed switches and let me say they are good.

VERY NICE !  Thanks for sharing!

Bob, find an early un-webbed finned cover, knock the fins off with a hammer, chuck the cover in your lathe, and make it into the best copy available.
