Parts For Sale / Hand Controls From A Sandcast
« on: July 15, 2016, 04:19:34 pm »
Left and right hand controls. The right side is disassembled, and has the bottom half with a return throttle cable hole.  It has a proper black kill switch.  They are faded, but could be used for a driver/survivor type bike.

$35 shipped in the U.S.

The gauge rings can be included for $10 extra.

Sandcast 4286 is listed on ebay with E371.  Seller says he acquired the bike with a K1 engine and put in E371.  In the VIN directory, 4286 is listed with E4991.

It looks like a very nice restoration.

Thank you, Kevin.  I wish I could say I'm 100% satisfied with the bike, or that it was as nice as so many of the restorations on this forum.  I have to sell the bike, now.  Time and money constraints have forced my hand despite a few things I wanted to fix, and even a few things I didn't know needed to be fixed, such as the fork top bolts.  Although the frame was listed with E4991, it had a K1 motor, and very few usable parts when I bought it a few years ago.  I regret not having the head fins fixed, among a couple other choices I made along the way.  I spent a lot of time trying to get the finish on the clear coated parts right, but they came out wrong.  The still looked nice, just not exactly right. I would never claim it's a museum quality bike.

As I conveyed to Gerard in a message, perhaps I should have asked for more guidance from this forum during the course of my build.

The motor ended up leaking from the cam pucks, and had to be pulled.  After installing helicoils in all 12 of the cam tower bolt holes, It's back up and running.

I still need a few last touches, but I'm just about there.

I went from this:

To this:

I think I'll cut a hole in some newspaper for masking and touch up the exhaust baffles with some black paint.

I took my first ride on 4286 after a year long restoration!  I still have a few last bits to finish (like the fender stays and tank emblems/trim), but it felt great to shift into all five gears after a motor rebuild ;D

Here it is running nicely, but I need to turn down the idle.  The 2-3 coil went bad, so I'm hoping for a replacement and swapped in a used but nice looking stock coil.

Looking great! Do you have all the remaining body parts painted and ready to go?
Keep posting your progress.
Duane

I have the rest of the body parts ready to go.

She fired up for the first time and fired on all four. Didn't even need the choke! It felt pretty great to hear my first full engine rebuild fire up and run like it should!

A sale may already be in the works, as a German fellow who exports bikes and cars from the states is very interested in buying it when I'm done.  He stopped by the shop to talk with one of the mechanics, saw my bike and fell in love with it. I have plenty left to do, but in the grand scale of things it's a small percentage of the work I've done.  Once I broke it down, I basically had a frame, a few good bolts, and two wheel hubs to start this project.  It was never going to be an all original bike, so I'm very happy with how it's turning out.

Current project next to the new project ;D

Got a CL72 today!  It was pretty much free...motor's locked up, so we pulled the plugs and sprayed Kroil down the cylinders.

Worked on the sandcast also.  Installed the starter motor, cam chain tensioner, exhaust pipes, headlight bucket, and a few odds and ends.

Those painted parts still look so nice!  At least in the pictures they do.  I would suggest keeping them original and have them buffed..It is amazing how well old paint can be brought back to life by the right hands.  Tires are a necessity if the bike is to be ridden.  Re-chroming original parts is always more acceptable than buying reproductions.  If your mirrors are originals, they are absolutely worth restoring.  Your fenders and rims look pretty good from the pictures..do they need refinishing?  Honestly if that bike were mine, I'd just get it to run well, clean it, put 4-4 pipes on it and call it done.

I didn't really think about coating the metal Pete..I hope it will be okay.  Maybe I will hit them with some metal polish.

I got my tires put on, finished the front forks, and turned the bike into a roller finally.

No matter the consensus here, it will be up to the CHP officer who inspects Ujeni's VINs during the registration process.

Thanks Pete!

I had a little more progress today, and took a shot at spiffing up one of the oil lines by hitting the fitting on the wire wheel, then shot the braided line with some black paint.  I think it turned out nice!  I'll clean the other next week and get them installed with the oil tank.

Before:

After:

Exhaust spigots installed with new screws and crush gaskets:

Figured out that I just needed the end caps to get the swing arm spacing, so I got that back in the frame as well (I'm using the top hat bushings, and wasn't sure which pieces I needed, and how to get the spacing right)
