Fin repair oil filter case

Anyone have experience splicing a fin together.  I have a finned no rib case with a broken fin.  I plan to trim the broken fin, and weld on a fitted piece from a junk yard part.  Anyone have any experience with this sort of repair

If you can find a good welder it shouldn't be an issue but the die cast material is not so easy to weld. Mark may have some tips about using some pieces from a finned cover as the welding medium
