Yamiya Seat Foam and cover
on:
February 20, 2010, 02:51:01 pm
Hi there...just wondered if anyone has installed these? I have done a preliminary fitting and it looks like the foam may have to be trimmed? (at the back anyway) Anyone else install these and if so was it a slam dunk install? No adjustments?
Thanks
Steve

Steve:
The foam being a little bit wider/longer than the seat base is not necessarily a bad thing. The cover should be a snug to a tight fit as the foam will give and settle over time. Foam is sold by the property of density. The more dense the foam the more it will hold its shape with less give. If your cover fits over the foam with minimal effort it should be fine. The seat base and foam should be as close a match as possible 1/8 inch over the circumference of the base is do-able . Marty

I had one of my seats trimmed (professionally) using the foam and cover from Yamiya. Mate, it's as good as you'll get. The only issue I had was the strap hardware. Not good repo stuff, so save your original hardware and have it rechromed and use that. I just saw one of his $700 Ebay seats another member bought and I was very impressed with the finish. One needs to be aware that these complete seats have the very early seat base that are a little different to the run of the mill K0 bases. Good if you got an early VIN so use your base if you want original finish (unless you have an early VIN) KP

Thanks KP
I also have noticed that the Honda logo is pretty white....as opposed the the greyer original. I have heard someone say they used a grey felt marker to darken it....any other opinions on achieving "the look"
Thanks

I think Andy Morris may have posted the use of a marker pen of some sort. Maybe need to revist some old posts. Cheers KP

The seat trim pins are bent over, is it a problem to straighten them and take the speed nuts off and then put them back? I have a new red foam but want to re-use the cover. There's no competent shop near me right now at least that I trust.
I have considered just running a new seat and keeping this one on the shelf but, doesn't seem to follow the theme of not replacing any more than necessary.

I've done what you intend in the past and it worked fine. Doing it twice may not work though

Update, I removed the cover, installed the Yamiya red foam and re-installed the original cover with great success. The Avon skin so soft worked wonders on the vinyl.

My late 69 K0 seat was trashed so I bought a repop base and forgot to order red foam......
Is Yamiya the only source for the red seat foam?

As far as I know, recently it was out of stock too.
I was told a small slice of red foam stuck through the seat pan looks authentic, I tried it on a late K0 seat that had red and yellow foam, it could work until you can get a red one. I replaced the red foam on my sandcast and put the original cover back on. Avon skin so soft bath oil has worked wonders on it.
