Frame VIN Tags

Would ALL owners who have frames with Riveted VIN Tags please email me your:

1. Manufacture Date stamped on the tag,

2. Frame Number, AND

3. Upper Crankcase Casting Date ?

It will be interesting to note the period of time between the date on the crankcase casting and the date of manufacture noted on the VIN frame tag.

When did the riveted vin tags start or stop? All I have is a sticker. Don't know what I'm gonna do when I repaint my frame.

If you're really careful you can get the old sticker off.  Slowly work a razor blade under it to cut through the glue.  If you're not lucky with that or are missing it you can get a replica from www.reproductiondecals.com.  They don't (or can't) list the Honda stuff on their site so you have to call them.  Its not as thick as the original aluminum one but on the frame from a foot away you can't tell differnce.

Warm it up with a hot air gun (not too hot) it softens the glue and they can be eased off with a razor blade as described, undamaged.

I have a riveted tag VIN is 1017002 and the manufacture date is 12/69. Where do I find the date of manufacture in the crankcase?

How do you know the manufactoring date of my bike # 1983 ?

Hi Sgt

By "extrapolation" on frame number intervals. When I figure out the same manufacturing date for two not successive frames, I deduce that the frames between these 2 dates were built at the same "month/year". For sandcast I take the casting date indicated on the site.

Globally the method seems not so bad and the results are coherent due to the fact that in 1969 Honda production was intensive, my hypothesis is that the cases were quickly installed in a frame.

In the case of your #1983 it's indicated on the site : 21-May so 05/69.

This "method" is obviously more precise when there is a VIN plate.

But the question of Steve was: is the manufactoring date on the VIN tag same as the casting date, how much time between?
