So, in the process of discussion with Duane Wilson it *appears* there are now THREE different type of exhaust fitted to pre-4150 vins.  The discovery was made that a set of 4 exhaust have:  1. short 3 mm welded seams AND 2. have the shorter mounting to accommodate the shorter mounting bolts AND 3. do not have Lotus Root baffles.  In separate instances, Duane and i have made these observations on pre-4150 vins.

UK Parts list number 4 dated Sept. 10 1977 identifies 3 different part numbers for the #1 and #4 exhausts, and 2 part numbers for the #2 and #3 exhausts. The third type (#1 and #4 only) is indeed due to the change in length of the mounting bolt which occurred at VIN 1001222.

Technically of course there is fourth type, part number ending 620, as fitted to machines originally supplied to a number of European markets (different diffuser fitted).

Chris, do you have or know of any vin info between the short seam Lotus Roots and the short seam "no.no" exhaust ?

That same previously referred to UK parts list shows a starting part number for the exhaust diffuser at VIN 1004149. Maybe this was the change part number from Lotus Root to No. No.? Strangely the image in the list looks to be a Lotus Root type, though the parts list images are not always accurate. No other info that I have come across.

1865/E1973 i recently purchased had "short seam" mufflers and the mount was the shorter early type = features same as Lotus root.  However, this muffler is fitted with the later typoe diffuser, NOT Lotus Root diffusers.
