I have only have seen chrome on the swing arm shaft and nut.  I do not recall ever seeing any "8" bolt chrome plated; only zinc.

I agree!

The chromed bolts are "ever" without "8".

They are only plan.

I have a question about another item.  Is the gear box retainer cover, 44642-300-000, on the front wheel chrome plated?  And just double checking, are the six bolts and nuts chrome plated too?

My cover was removed for the dual disk brake conversion Mark but I believe the bolts are original. Gold Zinc. The nuts, I'm not sure of. They are slotted lock nuts and appear to be Clear Zinc plated.

The cover is sort of a dull chrome, perhaps only nickle and chrome (no copper plate under nickle...?)  The bolts are chrome.  As my memory serves me, the nuts are clear zinc.

Would the original bolts be long enough for the dual conversion?  I've never seen slotted lock nuts on the front disc.  Maybe those bolts and nuts were part of a conversion kit?

When I think about it they could have been part of the kit Mark. I thought perhaps with the cover removed they may have had enough bolt length. Now that I think about it the cover is probably not near as thick as a rotor hence the different bolts. Odd they used gold zinc. Since I'm going to retain the dual disk setup I'll stick with it unless I find info to the contrary.

OK, it's not that I didn't trust anyone's opinion but I did a little research on testing for chrome and zinc plating.  I found that you can use hydrocloric acid to test.  A drop of concentrated acid on chrome will have a mild reaction and turn from clear to green after a minute and on zinc will have a vigorous and immediate reaction.  I found some toilet bowl cleaner that contains hydrocloric acid but I'm not sure that it's very concentrated.  I put a drop on a known zinc part and a disc nut and there was an immediate reaction.  The nuts that hold the brake disc are definately zinc.  I tried a drop on the disc bolts and plate and after a minute there was virtually no reaction and it seemed to turn a little yellowish maybe.  No doubt the finish is not zinc so I think I can safely say the plate and bolts are chrome.  With a more concentrated solution I probably would have gotten the expected result.  The plate may be only nickel and chrome but mine is quite shiny.  The metal itself just isn't polished and probably makes is seem duller.  Take it for what it's worth.

I thought of one more thing, the horn cover.  Tough one to do.  I'm glad I have one that doesn't need it.  I've added it to the list.

I was just looking at the 10/69 parts  manual, as I am unsure on the finish of 'Spring Adjusting Caliper' 45119-300-020. Mine from 10/69 looks like it was chromed but not sure if it's standard. Anyone know?

There is a person on eBay UK selling polished SS springs for the CB400/4 brake and claims originals were chromed but it's a long time since I restored my CB400/4.

Cheers ...  Ash
