Not sure if this is the right category but I thought I would throw this out there.  I've got one in pretty decent shape but the rest of mine aren't so good.  There are some companies around here that could probably mold them.  I have no idea the cost but before I checked into it I wanted to see if there is any interest.  What do you guys do, clean them up and use them or not?

I thought this was discussed elsewhere already but I couldn't find the thread.  Sorry for rehashing if that's the case.

The two part numbers I'm referring to are the 8 carburetor insulator bands #17255-300-000 and the 4 airbox bands #17255-230-000.  I seem to recall that there was a discussion about the finish being different.  My recollection is that the -230- bands were likely zinc plated and the -300- bands were shinier, not full chrome but maybe just nickel/chrome.  I have tried to find some NOS -300- bands but they are non-existent.  I have found -230- bands and the newer ones are black.  I also found some old NOS -230- bands that were in the original sealed bags and to add to the confusion they had different plating.  One looked like zinc, almost yellow, and the other looked like the chrome described above.

My main question is, are there differences besides the finish?  It appears that the -230- band supersedes the -300-.  So maybe the -230- was slightly larger but works in both places?  Or there were two suppliers and one was eliminated?  I looked through mine and couldn't see any difference in length but the ends have a slightly different shape.  I have about twice as many as one kind over the other.  If I had to guess I would say that is the carb band.  Does anyone have pictures showing differences between the bands?  I'll try to get around to posting pics of the different ends.

If my memory is incorrect on the finish please set me straight.

Brakes / Finish on Pipe B, Front Brake - Pt. #45128-3000-010
« on: June 16, 2015, 07:44:24 am »
Does anyone know the correct finish on the subject part?  New replacements are black and I haven't been able to locate an original looking one.  What is the black finish?  Can it be stripped and replated?  Worst case I would try to replate a used original.

On all of my sandcasts there was an M8 hex head screw on the bottom of the right side of the steering stem.  Does anyone know what it's for?  Also does anyone know what length it is and if it had a washer?  I forgot to make note of it when I removed it.

I brought up some questions on my restoration thread about wire harnesses.  I got some excellent replies from Steve and Wayne and Ash.  There are also a couple of other threads with bits of info here and there so I thought it would be a good idea to try to consolidate everything into one thread.  I think it should include repair methods, materials, parts sources, restoration tricks, -050 conversions, re-wrapping  and anything and everything to do with wire harnesses and related components.

I'll start if off with my original question.  I have a -040 harness that is in pretty decent shape.  I'm looking at options for "cleaning" it up including replacing terminals and yellowed sleeves or finding a way to remove/reduce the yellowing.  One challenge is I haven't been able to source all of the connectors.  I did score some of the standard 3.5mm male and female, original tin-plated terminals from an old Honda dealer but he didn't have any of the multi-pin or right angle ones.  I have found some of the other connectors online but not all of the insulators.  And if I can find insulators there still is the challenge of heat crimping them onto the wires.

Cleaning is another challenge.  I'm looking at options like ultrasonic cleaners but I don't know much about it or what chemicals to use, etc.  There are a lot of questions and I'm sure the answers are out there.

Thanks,
Mark

Engine Electrical / Color of wire sheathing on points assembly
« on: December 10, 2014, 08:58:35 am »
Anyone know what color the sheathing was on the early points assembly wires?  E100 was black but may have been replaced.  Of the others I have half are white and half are black.  Replacements all seem to be white.  Any opinions?

Engine Mechanical / "Special" screws on cam holders???
« on: December 01, 2014, 10:58:01 am »
I'm ready to put my cam holders on and my parts manual says there is a special 6 x 56 screw (item #4 in the diagram).  My notes say that E100 had hex head "8" screws, but it had been worked on.  Pictures I have from several engines show the same.  Also when I checked through my fasteners (from almost 4 sandcasts) I found no screws that matched the parts book.  My question is has anyone seen the special cross, hex, flange screw called out in the early parts book?  In other words, were they actually used on the early engines?
Thanks,
Mark

Not an auction but a thread on the SOHC4 site.  I'm guessing not original pair up but maybe.  I have no interest but figured someone here might.

There is an idea that Wayne and I talked about.  That is taking a -050 harness and removing the extra black and brown on the headlight bucket end and replacing the -050 tag with a replica -040 tag.  Wayne had pretty good luck reproducing that tag.  It would take a well trained eye to tell the difference.  Unfortunately I don't think the -050 harnesses are availbable any more.  KP, what are your thoughts.

Fuel (gas - petrol) Tanks, Side Covers and Air Box / Short throttle springs
« on: February 26, 2014, 09:09:03 am »
For the #97 carbs I'm planning on using 28 tops, 5mm cables and short springs and slides.  I scored on a set of carbs that has everything I need except it was missing one of the springs.  Anyone have one they could sell me?  I think the part number is 16185-300-004.  There is a company in town who can make some for me but the minimum order is $300 so pretty much the same price for 1 or 25.  I just hate to spend $300 when I only need one.  So the other option would be if anyone needs/wants some I could have extras made.

I searched because I thought the answer should be here somewhere but I couldn't find anything.  There is a discussion going on the SOHC4 site.  I said (and I may be wrong) that the process was permanent mold casting but there are some postings with sources that contradict that.  Anyone have a definitive source?

Engine Mechanical / Oil pump differences
« on: November 04, 2013, 10:15:26 am »
I am in the process of rebuilding some oil pumps.  Here’s a pic of six that I have.  The top row is from diecast engines and the bottom row is from sandcast engines.  The one on the lower right is from E100.  I didn’t see a thread about this so before I started taking them apart I carefully looked them over and made some interesting observations.  There are four different versions that I see.  I’ll call them early sandcast (E100), later sandcast (E1490 & E1789), early diecast and later diecast.

The early sandcast pump has “8” bolts on the oil stopper valve cap, the others do not.

Both early and later sandcast pumps (like the one on the left) have a rougher sandcast-like finish than the diecast versions, especially on the right and left end plates.

This view shows a plug that is on all pumps except the later diecast (shown on the right).

This picture shows a later diecast on the left, early diecast in the middle and a sandcast on the right.  Notice the lack of a plug in the upper right area of the later diecast pump and the cover is different.

There is a difference in the casting of the later diecast (on left).  All the others are like the pump on the right.

I saved the best for last.  The early sandcast pump (on the right) has a relief valve cap that is tapered down from the hex.  All others are just flat.  I definitely have to save that piece.

Here's a thread from the SOHC4 site that you may find interesting.  The guy makes the square washers used on the ground connection in the headlight bucket (as well as the round ones and points cover gasket too).  They look good and are cheap enough.  I'm going to order a few sets of the headlight washers.

This one looks pretty rough.  I had to look twice at the number.  If it was 7414 I probably wouldn't care how rough it was.  ;) Seriously, I don't think he'll get $4500.  I actually haven't yet looked closely enough at it to have an opinion whether it's legit or not.

Engine - Cosmetic Only / Expert Opinions Needed On Smooth Oil Filter Cover
« on: December 26, 2012, 11:26:19 am »
I’m trying to decide what I should do with my oil filter cover for #97.  It has a lot of pitting on top (front?) which appears to be mainly road blast but it’s actually has pitting all over it (is that typical?) that I’m assuming is original.  I thought I would sandpaper part of it away but how far should I go?  Some of it is pretty deep.

Also in this pic you can see what looks like remnants of paint.  Were some of these painted?  It could also be clear coat that’s been partially sanded.  You can see some of the pitting here too.  This cover didn’t come with the bike and who knows what’s happened to it.  My goal is to make it look as correct as possible for #97.  My thought is to sand the top until it matches the sides, polish it to a brushed finish and then clear coat it.  Any thoughts?
Thanks, Mark
