Links to Auctions and Classifieds / Sandcast 5944 E5870
« on: October 06, 2020, 09:26:45 pm »
What can we see with this all original, real clean one owner bike (cept for the chain and exhaust). I'm thinking he forgot the mirrors and air box. Looks to be relatively unmolested, but terrible photos. I doubt it would be valued at much over $20k
Thoughts anybody

General Discussion / Recessed Switches
« on: July 28, 2020, 06:48:01 pm »
It just had to happen. The recessed switch is now being reproduced and they are very very good copies. Photos attached
I have a friend in Japan who gave me one of these early prototype recessed switches and let me say they are good.

Review of VIN'S For Directory / Frame & Engine Number Spread
« on: June 28, 2020, 12:50:02 am »
The topic (or debate) of frame/engine number spread is an interesting one. Owning Frame 28 with Engine 132, I often see comment questioning (incorrectly I might add) this number spread. Frames 7 came with engine 90, 9 came with engine 97, 123 came with engine 247, 175 with engine 263 and 180 with engine 302. So go figure. Rarely a comment is made (if comments there are) where a 100 or higher difference occurs with a 3 digit or higher frame number.  Surprisingly, I've seen comments (comments there has been) made by some when a frame/engine number is considered too close. Other discussion is had on engine numbers being lower than frame numbers where some believe (believers there are) this should not occur at all. Honestly, I have no idea why some number spreads are very close and why some are very widely spaced, why some engine numbers are lower than the frame number and we could speculate these questions for the next 100 years and still have no answer (for answers there isn't). On thing we do know factually 100%, is that the pairing of frame and engine was a random production line event (and this ultimately could be the factual 100% answer or the golden fleece itself) Of the pairings we do know about, many are within a spread of 100 and most generally are spread to an upper limit of 200
Some interesting data is available in our own VIN directory, however this does not prove anything factually about frame engine spread. These observations (Indeed! I stole this little saying from Mr Swan  ;D ) merely show the diversity of frame/engine number spread using the VIN registry as a guide (for a guide it is).
Of all the registrations recorded, approximately 75 or so have a difference of 300 or more, and of those, approximtely 53 or so have a difference of 400 or more. We can say without doubt a proportion of these are engine/frame swaps, however not all. Regardless, that's a significant number of machines with a wide spread given the number of registrations in the directory. And we must equally accept (accept we must  :)) there will be a fair number of frame/engine swap machines in our directory with a spread of under 300, as owners wanting to make whole their "not complete" machine spread to within what most consider the norm, let's say not more than a 250 difference. You still here?  ;)
But wait - there's more  8)
Of the 27 pairings of the first 200 machines registered the following is noted:
13  (~50%) have a frame engine spread of over 30
7  (~25%) have an engine spread greater than 80
3 (~12%) have a spread of over 100
Now there's a bit of stuff for Ya'All to consider
Gin & tonic time I think (for thinking I sometimes do)

Brakes / Master Cylinder Sleeve
« on: June 26, 2020, 01:13:22 am »
Just received back a spare no line master cylinder after installation of a 9/16" stainless sleeve. This master cylinder had a corroded inner and wouldn't have been worth anything unless fixed. Cost was $135 (Ozzie $) ]and given the rarity of these correctly coded no line Master Cylinders, worth every penny. Also a photo of another no line and early correct coded Kawasaki, anodise stripped, MCs ready for polishing and re-anodising.
I understand these can be re-bored to 5/8" and will work fine but I couldn't find anyone to do that job. (I didn't look that hard though)

Some years back we had a discussion on "Headlight Buckets" and the numbering inside the bucket. Early buckets had no numbers, later ones had 1 and later still had 2 and I believe even 3 was used. The replacement Red, Blue and Gold buckets sold as spare parts often had no number or a 1. No real answer was given as to what these numbers meant or what was correct. I think the consensus at the time was early original buckets had no number.
I recently went to my painter with 3 NOS buckets. One had no number, one had the number 1 and the third was a black bucket and had a number 2. When you look at these buckets individually the holes all look the same size, but line them up and measure them (as my painter did), you guessed it, they're all different size holes. Not by much but different size holes nevertheless, so I'm thinking this riddle of no-number, numbers 1 and 2  is just a type designation related to the modified design, in this case, the size hole in the bucket. Seems the size is proportional to the number, no number the smallest and the higher number, ie: 2, the largest. Others may have already known this, I didn't

General Discussion / Listing 28 for Sale
« on: June 08, 2020, 04:44:30 am »
Just letting the group know that I'll be listing #28 for sale in the next few days. I decided to paint her in the end and that decision really did make the bike, IMHO. Pretty well stock save for the top end engine overall and paint
I've included a few photos here but there will be numerous with the listing

Brakes / Brake Pressure Switch
« on: May 13, 2020, 03:33:39 am »
I had a black brake pressure switch re-zinc plated and had it finished in gold bright. Now I'm thinking it should be plain blue zinc finish but I'm now not sure. My 2 early framed bikes have plain blue finish as far as I can tell but on another splitter I have a gold finished black unit. Now I know that age can dull the gold finish so much so it can be difficult to distinguish. I'm fairly sure the sandcasts had the plain blue zinc finish but need some help with this. Any suggestions, opinions or evidence (photos) would be appreciated.
Thanks KP

Brakes / Brake Pedal Spindle Difference
« on: March 23, 2020, 10:39:37 pm »
The K0 brake pedal spindle/brake rod actuator is unique and somewhat different from the later model type. Other than the obvious "end" difference, the K0 spindle looks to have been machined from bar stock whereas the later one looks to have had minimal machining from a forged/cast blank, and has other subtle differences to the K0. I'm not sure when this part changed but I've seen many of the later type being sold as off K1s, K2s etc, so suspect I'm thinking there change was at introduction or during the K1 production run.
I've posted this topic for clarity for those that didn't know the difference. I know the K0 type but confess, having little knowledge past K0, I didn't know about the later item. Still living and learning  ;)

Review of VIN'S For Directory / SINGLE DIGIT VINs
« on: January 23, 2020, 06:08:06 pm »
The last 2 trips I've made to Japan were interesting in that I met local collectors of early numbered bikes and visited Yamiya and the Restore Shop. Anyways, my interest is tracking down early frame numbered bikes as many Japanese owners don't record their frame numbers in our directory. Additionally, engine numbers are generally not stated by Japanese owners.
The point of this post is to advise that Frame #5 exists and is owned by a collector in Japan.  I've also been advised that Frames #1 through #4 (although still anecdotal) were not released for sale. Kawasaki on the other hand released all their single digit bikes and 8 are known to exist with frame 1 in the Kobe Maritime Museum and another in a USA museum
So far, of the 9 possible single digit bikes, 3 remain. Frames 5, 7 and 9. There may be another or two but my thoughts are that these 3 are all there is.
Just thought I would share this information
