The Beginning / Early Mirrors
« on: February 17, 2010, 07:17:58 pm »
Hi all,
Is it possible to disassemble an early mirror and have everything in one piece. I can disassemble a mirror and get 100 pieces. I have a pair of early mirrors that are garbage unless I can get the metal re-chromed. Seems to me that what ever gets assembled, can be disassembled but knowing how is my dilema. Any answers. KP

Chrome - Anodizing and Other Metal Finish Procedures / Anodize & Paint
« on: February 17, 2010, 07:04:05 pm »
Hello all, It's been a while. I've been to the south pole shovelling snow and all that. Now if you believe that you been smokin tooooo much. Hmmm!. Anyways, who has got the latest on re-anodosing, anodising or painting brake master cylinders & switches. Has anybody had any more info on the correct finish of these parts or has anybody done a reanodise yet. This topic was discussed some time back and concensus was that the jury is still out. Can ANYONE shed some light on this subject. I was telling Steve yesterday that I've tried to strip the black off a master cylinder without success so it aint paint. And fellas, how was the Ohio meet ............. bargains everywhere KP  :)

Fuel (gas - petrol) Tanks, Side Covers and Air Box / Air Cleaner Boxes
« on: February 17, 2010, 03:49:22 pm »
Hi all. Now we've had wheels, spokes, exhausts etc but nothing on air cleaner boxes. I see that there are several different styles and would luv to know if anyone can get the discussion going around these. Andy told me a year or so back about the two distinct types of airbox, these being the 2 screw clamp and 3 screw clamp types. If there is anyone who can add to the discussion, especially when abouts the 3 screw type was introduced, would be great to hear. Are all Sandcast types the 2 screw type? Also, are there any specific differences within types? KP  8)

VIN's / Engine # & Frame VIN
« on: February 17, 2010, 02:43:21 pm »
internet. 5.30 am and I was up, and on my PUSH bike pounding the tarmac. Some of you still had a hold of it!
Interesting discussion on the engine #s and VINs. The thing with the casting dates on the cases is that this is, (if these numbers are the actual casting dates), the date the case was cast at the foundary. This is not necessarily the date the cases were machined or the date the motor was assembled. Mind you the probability is that machining and assembly followed not long after casting. The cases, also prior to machining, were not necessarily a matched pair. It was only during machining that a set of cases became a matched pair. Again, one can assume that the cases were laid out in the machine shop in pairs. The magic day however was when that fellow with the hammer and numbered stamps did his/her thing. Probably not a lot of time passed from casting to number crunching, nevertheless a lot of assumptions. One thing though is that Honda had a habit of numbering prototype engines as part of the production run, thus the first few engines were probably prototypes/come test engines. Methinks possibly engine # 4, 5 or 6 was the first actual running CB750 engine in a frame.
VINs on frames is another matter entirely. The number was the last thing done to a bare frame. From my understanding, the paint went on before the number, so the best we can hope for is that a week or so would be the time from manufacture to the numbers being stamped on the frame. Steve raises an interesting point in relation to the 69 date. The point that would need to be asked if we accept some of the assumptions, is what if the frame was made, in say, late August and wasn't stamped until September. Does it get an 8 or a 9. But then how did the frame makers know when to stop placing the horn tag on the RH side rather than the LH side. Possibly this wasn't so much determined by a frame number but a point in time, ie: "as from Monday we will no longer make any LH horn brackets". In the end, I wasn't there but I am certainly interested in the answers. Come on you guys with the knowledge, add to these discussions. This should not be secret squirrell business KP  :-*

Engine - Cosmetic Only / Sandcast Engine - Paint or No Paint
« on: February 17, 2010, 11:43:25 am »
Hi all. Can anyone shed some light on whether the sandcast engine/parts were painted. Yes or No. I've heard different views and thought it may be a topic the more knowledgable amoungst you guys would like to comment on. I have a few K0 heads, 3 early and 1 late, that have what looks to be silver paint. The sandcast cases I have, look to have no paint on them. KP  :-\

General Discussion / MAP - MAPP Gas
« on: February 17, 2010, 11:34:16 am »
How hot does MAP (MAPP) gas get? I have learned to solder silver, copper, and brass using silver solder with acytelyne. I would like to purchase some aluminum solder and flux so I can practice soldering and repairing broken parts for my bike.

I don't want to go through the expense of an acetylene set up at home if one of those two tank MAP and Oygen kits from the hardware store will get just as hot.

I figure I will need between 900 and 1100 degrees F possibly more to melt the solder. "Dont quote me on the temps..... I will be re-checking them before I get to work"

Engine Mechanical / 17mm Oil Filter Bolts
« on: February 17, 2010, 11:30:58 am »
Eli, the 17mm oil filter bolts are found on later Honda models. Not sure what you guys have there but our Honda CX500, CX550 oil filter bolts are the same as the SOHC CB750 12/14mm bolts. Since we're sharing our secret squirrell info through these discussions, here's a neat trick straight from Bellaricky Dickie. Take a 17mm oil filter bolt to a machine shop, one which has an indexing cutter. Have them take the 17mm filter head down to a 14mm filter head. Smooth out the machine marks, re zinc plate and it's all over rover. Touchdown KP  8)
