General Discussion / Re: my most recent blunder. seat'
« on: October 10, 2011, 03:40:03 pm »
Cliff, Thank-you...My seat pan is roughly the same length as your's..(my research has shown the possability of as many as 3 different pans ) and was hesitant to bitch w/out knowing if I had a "proper pan" for the Duck tail...At least now I know I'm once again in search of a "cover". Fortunatly I've some experiance w/foam (shaping etc) from my own projects, & have re-covered many ATV/Dirt bike/PWC seats at work. Thanks again for taking the time. G

General Discussion / my most recent blunder. seat'

Gents, a little help please, My SC. (1400/1355) came to me with a "flat" seat. it had a small tear in the rider butt area,  and has "dandruff" issues at the seat pan/foam holes. hinge points and latch appear to be as OE. and fit is good.  My intent was to "splice" In  the "duck tail" padding and "arieated" sections of foam from bits of other seats on hand, shape and re-cover with a repro "duck tail" cover. Alas, my 1st cover (from Z1 Ent.) was again for the flat seat. no biggie, I explained prob, & they sent me a "duck tail" cover in good time. Problem is, this cover, while correct for "pocket" and "pressings"  is roughly 2 inches short in overall length. If some one could simply give a rough measurement from the  front to rear length of a duck tail seat pan, or knows the differnces it would help me in my quest. Thanks G

Bike 576/748 / Re: Here we go! Restoring 576/748
« on: August 18, 2011, 12:05:54 am »
Wayne, obviously your' no "neophite"  and am hesitant to add. but main bearings sizes were/are determined by both case & crank demensions. Having case markings put you 1 step ahead of most. as these were the first to "dis-appear" (generally before the "magic marker" colors on the bearings themselves). crank sizes (both rod & main) were usually etched on the inside of the crank flyweights at cam chain. read left to right, 5 digits main, 4 digits rod. with a chart in the shop man to derive size/color..comparing case to crank clearances. Striations due to passing "debris"thru bearing are generally of little consequence, but any apperance of "copper" should be addressed. some "300" main bearins are NLA, but have been superceded to 422 or 425  (I think) at any rate plasitiguage doesn't lie. unless easily discernable damage has been done, My concern would be the maintaining of oil pressure  which after failed oil pumps/blockage falls upon wiped plane bearings. watching w/intrest, G

Marizio, Welcome. and while a newcomer myself, forgive me if i "share". early guages, (those with "pebbled" plastic bodies & plasic lenses) had 2 different drive assemblies, & used different chrome bases. The info is here, but requires searching. replacing jewels & lenses means quite a bit of never meant work and can be expensive. I would make sure drives were correct for my application before proceding. luck G

Also possible, weep from cam chain tensioner, either at gasket or from tensioner rod passage. Tip, locating oil leaks when oil is new & "clear" can be difficult, especially for those of us with "poor vision". Powdered deoderants & arisol foot sprays show "snail trails" which are much easier to read, & are easy to clean. Luck g

General Discussion / Re: Motorcycle Salvage yards in Colorado
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:04:16 pm »
Alan, with the arrival of Ebay, motorcycle "junk-yards" have just about dis-appeared. in the  Denver Boulder area, I can think of only 2 , "Steel's" in Denver, & "Ty's" in Longmont. the "DUMP" ( Denvers used m/c parts) and "Boulder Bike Works" of various locations, are long gone. the end of an era perhaps, but then, their "offerings" had been reduced by age & attrition to almost nothing and in order to survive, "amost nothing": became dear. Ebay & Craigs list, are the current norm, & I'll not defend "em, BUT ,,,,The odds of finding  the bit  you need on a "global" scale, far outweigh the odds of scrounging 'em"  off the ground in the general area a similar "derilect" once laid. Shop "forums" for similar model owners, "they're notorious packrats" . & the crap they've accrued will be both "TRUER"  than ebay sellers & of better condition. luck g

Paint - Badges and Component Refinishing / tank emblems
« on: June 02, 2011, 10:06:22 pm »
A little help please. I have 2 sets of gas tank emblems. 1 set is in sittu  on  what I believe to be an un-molested  K1 tank,(non-wrinkle. r/h cock, 4 nickel, ruby red, painted  stripe,) It has "zits" between the letters. and the letters are filled in white... The 2nd set,  of unknown year tho OE, has "dimples" within letters, smooth bridges between letters, and also has white paint within letters. the mounting posts correspond with my "recent aquisition" wrinkle tank.the "bases" of all emblems are silver. In reading previous posts, there is a note that a posted pic.is incorrect tho it has "dimples " within letters...& a reference (lost) to yami. for correct.. What am I missing ? Can I "paint" my "lettered dimples' emblems in black  and "Detail/strip" the chrome outlines, ? or is there anouther  configuration out there. Thanks in advance,, G

KP, Thanks for "up" was un-aware Yamiya offered repro tanks,  Am 'watching " a "un-bidded" proper tank at $250.00  w/serious dents, & have no "inside line" on a bodyman capable/willing  to take on such a project. Am guessing that after body work/ paint & repairs to present "bits",  Painted "cosmetic's will tally to  over a "grand" easily.. WHEW, It looks like this project may take longer than I thought. Ach, no matter, As long as there's a "dream", there's a reason to "strive". Thanks, G

OK,  Fairy Tales all start out "once upon a time".  & Sea stories "Now this ain't no shit". This is neither,  just the story of my Sand cast. which you may or not believe/or find entertaining... In the summer of 1983 a much younger Gane was working as Parts Mgr in a long since defuct Honda dealership when a gent came in complaining of a "bottom end rattle" in a rather "rough" 1970 CB750. The Service Mgr. ( a close friend to this day ) attempted to explain that the rattle was a combination of primary chain & clutch noise which were "charactaristic" to the  beast & nothing to be concerned about.... Apparently this didn't appease the gent, & He went "up front" to see what kind of trade -in the shop would offer. It must not have been much, As the Service manager "Andy" Wound up with the bike & title. Fast forward a couple years, "Andy" is offered a position w HONDA  & has to move to Gardena for "training & position as "tech ref". & sells me a "Dead" Dodge van & its contents... Forgive, but I've no recall of the amount but it was "minimal" I was an aptmnt dweller at at the time & parked the van at my parents place until they started making "threats".... a starter & head gasket  (no fun) finally made the "highway star" sell able, & I did. & "broke even"... Inside  the van was a hodge podge of parts, & "most" of what is now the 1400.   Like most, I knew that a "rough cast" 750 eng. was worth holding on to, but figured a '70 titled bike was "simply early" & nothing special. As a result, as the notion struck me, I "pieced together"  the bike with whatever I had at hand ,& rode. Now. some 26+  year s  later I realize this machine has "intrensic value" & that over the years, I've "pulled numerous "boners". The most notable, "buying a "flat seat" (cause it fit), & hardware was right, & swapping fork s because I couldn't find correct seals. & the rust was beyond salvage. Because I was "ignorant" I focused my "parts searches with parts which were "period correct" rather than "true", As a result, my "scattered bike " is probly worth less than most " garage finds" . where the parts were "correct if "wasted". Still, knowledge is a tool.".. I've no plans to "show" this bike, or even to sell..It's like family.   My  "quest for this year was to achive proper paint. Unfortunatly "wrinlkle" tanks seem to be scarce, & THE 2 tanks I'd thought might qualify are dudds. STILL. I have an "honest" sandcast  frame & engine.  airbox is two hole w/out conture. exhaust  is 3 '300  & # 4 un stamped. anyone with a  salvagable wrinkle tank and or a 300# 4 pipe pls PM me, My object is not for "concourse"bike. Just a "consistant" period piece. I ride  this  bike..Abettt 4-500 miles a year,  my story is basicly one of neglect & ignorance,  still, I have good intentions, & hope that this winter I'll have the time & funds to have a much more "presentable" bike. as usual G

AW CRAP... I'M SORRY. I miss-typed... My Vin, is meerly cb7501001400. I am abashed. AND there are "complications"..... the CB7501001400 which is on my title & is stamped on the neck of my frame, is exactly the # of my engine...Which to my eye is sharp & perfect.... whereas the frame # while is straight & properly spaced, has been "rattle canned" over & is a more difficult "read" , Even I as a "newby" realize that having "matching" engine & frame #'s is impossible. the horn mount on my frame is on the left, so I'm  "thinking" it's "early"., and that somehow in the 10 years before it came to me the frame was replaced &  stamped to match eng. & "re-titled". Colorado  (my home) uses only frame #'s for registration. It is my "thought" to employ a "title company" (if I can dig up enough info) to register this bike as a '69 with a '69 "title".. Am I "out of my mind ?"  sorry to be a problem child.. G

Sorry, If i'm posting in the wrong area, where would be more apropriate? also, I should have posted the Vin of my bike. it is cb750100114. but your' responses have already helped. At least I now know I need to continue shopping for a tank w/ wrinkles visable thru cap opening. Another question please, I have looked at both the frame neck and engine upper case, but can find no date of manufacture. and looked thru the list of options & see no list of vin #'s with production dates. does such a thing exist ? because of the "brevity" of the vin's on these bikes I'm assuming there is no way to reference original color. in reading, it seems the candy ruby red was the most popular, and my personal favorite. my title is dated 1980,  so I know I'm at least the 2nd owner & possibly many more. I appreciate your' pacience, thanks g

Fuel (gas - petrol) Tanks, Side Covers and Air Box / Gas tanks

Hi, I need Info on tanks. I have 2 which have petcocks on the r/h side. both have only 2 "quarter" stamps on their bottoms, neither have "wrinkles" which can be discerned through gas cap opening. Indeed, the only "wrinkles" are abreast the petcock area. 1 tank has the remnants of OE red paint, & what I think to be correct gold w/black stripe 69-70 accent. it has sun faded to silver across the top, & has a "leg dent" &  2nd degree rust, the other I've "acid treated" & is  rust free. I stripped to bare metal, then "bondoed"  a couple "dime sized" dings @ 2 years ago. aged for a couple months,  & primed....  & have let "set" in prime to date... primer is smooth  & no recurance of rust. I have (to my knowledge)"correct" fork ears,H/L bucket & side covers & airbox halves  which came with the bike 20+ years ago. & have been riding A'LA with just my own aproximation  of OE paint.... I've managed to garner gas cap, petcock,& trim...BUT,, before I pull the trigger on what I consider a "expensive" paint job, I need to know, "DO I HAVE A PROPPER TANK" The pic/s I see when "sandcast" bikes go for auction show "wrinkles"directly below cap, are these "pre-teen" tanks?  Is there a "primer" availible to compare to ?  Am I asking the right questions? any help would be much appreciated. thanks g
